Cold air intake with battery/intake swap on budget!

(sorry i dont know how this is going to turnout, i am on this i pad thing and havnt uploaded pics on this. sorry if there way to big or not big enough
) I should start off by saying that i spent a total of $50 on this whole build. Im not sure why i did this to be honest, i guess it was on a whim when i bought the air filter haha i decided to do it right since i was going to do it. i looked online at cold air intakes and looked at the parts included in the kits. nothing seemed to fancy so why not make it myself? i saw a write up on this a long time ago on yota tech so i decided to go for it along with a battery swap.

here is what i ended up with in the end. its all color matching and everything haha. i extended the wires from the MAI from the stock location around the front of the radiator (inside the fancy black tube crap because i figure i might as well do things right the first time) along with an extended possitive battery cable (also in the fancy black tube thingy). i drilled a hole on the drivers side fender to hook in the battery tie down, the front of it bolted in a stock hole that was already there
i grounded the negitive off to the block and the chassic. everything is pretty self explanitory but i figured i would take some pictures anyways. i plan on getting some of LCE's street headers just so it can breath a little more. with just this done to it i was impressed on how great the throttle responce is! way different. im waiting to see what kinda MPG change i will get, if any... all this for $50 and about 5 hours doing everything the right way, i am pretty happy with how it turned out. anyways.. its late and once again sorry for any missed spelled words or size of the pictures and what not. Very groovy. I plan on doing this myself once I get my hands on a '82 Supra AFM. If you don't mind me suggesting, get something to wall off your air filter from the rest of the engine compartment so you're not breathing hot engine air.

What did you use for the elbow on your intake, is that muffler pipe? And silicon tubes?

I did the same thing when I grabbed a supra afm. Looks good. Kid is right about the partition. Look on my build thread, I built a simple one with some old sheet metal shelves, a rivet gun, and peel and seal (poor mans dynamat) ran an indoor outdoor temp gauge before and after and it made a big difference. While driving I would stay about 5 degrees above ambient temp.

yes i was going to wall off the side in a week or so, i did this on a whim so didnt think that far ahead. thank you though! the tube is a simple (pretty) 90 degree bend from auto zone, so is the filter and tubes. i think the brand name on most of it is Sprectra. i did this on a budget so i got the cheapest stuff for the most part. it just looks fancy. cool thing about this is that everthing here will fit with a supra AFM also so when i find one it will be plug and play (more than it would have been)

Looks good, especially after you wall-off. This must be one of the best bang for buck functional mods to the first gen. Wanna do this on mine but just keep stock air cleaner. Need to figure out where to put the intake tube.

man kiyobrown, i just went through the first few pages of your build. that thing is sweet! i may have stole a few ideas anyways... haha mine is going to be pretty freakin basic. im also going to take a drill and go down in front of the air filter and drill a million tiny holes behind where you cant see them so more cold air comes into the little compartment. how do you like those headers? i have been planning on getting those with my next pay check but we pretty much have the same set up and if they suck i want to know now before i get them.

Headers.... I liked them. The LCE exhaust sucked though. Honestly, I wouldn't waste your money on the headers unless you have an exhaust leak you need to fix, which I did. I ended up having to helicoil 5 of the 8 exhaust stud holes bc the PO stripped the out trying to stop the leaking warped mainfold. And if your O2 sensor is up high in the engine compartment instead of down under the drivers floorboard, you have to extend the wire, and you might end up throwing codes, since it's not in the stock location. I had to clear the code about a half dozen times before it stopped.

If I had to do it over again I would spend money on quality parts for a good tune up, and then gears to match the tire size. That did more for my drivability than the headers and exhaust did.

And all that stuff is sitting on my shop floor now. My buddy and I have been working on getting a 3.4 in there. It starts and runs, just buttoning up little stuff now before soft top season hits.

well what are you doing with the headers that were on yours? haha give me a good price on them and i will be able to do a full tune up to, and i already have gears to match my tire sizze so were good there. your 3.4 looks good, i myself am more of a 4 banger type of guy. i dont need to get anywhere very fast so this is a great engine for me. just giving it some life back now.

but really if you still have those and dont have plans for them i wouldnt mind taking them off your hands for the right price. i did my own exhaust last fall so its all nice and new ish. i only did from the cat back.

Well a coworker is buying the motor from me. And since he saved me the trouble of letting people on Craigslist run and drive my rig while having the motor up for sale, I am leaving the headers on there for him.

And the 3.4 won't make this a race car. I go 5 over at best. But to go from 110hp to 186hp while getting the same hp is a bonus. Really what sold me was going obdII. I was chasing a hard start problem around on the 22re for a couple months. ObdI was no help. Found a TSB that said it was a temp sensor. Ohmed out my afm. Checked every sensor around. Turns out rebuilder used a victor reinz head gasket instead of OEM. Swapped it out, problem solved. And I have a 2000 4runner as well. So now I can work on the same motor.
