Slave cylinder or master cylinder? That is the question.

So i lost all pressure in the clutch pedal the other night. No fluid in the master cylinder. Should i replace both to make sure? Is there an upgrade to the cheap stock parts. Any info would be appreciated.

It sounds like you need to find out where the leak is coming from. It may not be a bad master or slave cyl. It could be a bad line. Find the leak and fix as necessary.

Yup, fill it up and see if the pressure comes back for a bit and/or if its leaking. If its leaking track that sucker down.

check under the dash, you should see the leak there.

and, replace them BOTH.
also, ive had really bad luck with aftermarket stuff. they go bad again in several months.

use OEM parts again.

No offense but your advice doesn't really make any sense. The leak could be coming from anywhere. Leaks in the clutch lines aren't limited to interior. I would think that if his clutch system was leaking into the interior, he would notice it if the whole reservoir was empty.

You can put other parts in your 4runner from any auto parts store. Just about all of the parts they carry have warranties and are built to OEM spec. You don't have to replace both the master and slave cyl but they're cheap so it's not always a bad idea to do so, just not mandatory.

the mc's are these are VERY prone to leaking.
very, very prone.

i have NEVER seen a leak in a line, not to say it cant heppen, but ive never seen it. it will LIKELY be the MC, which is why i said to CHECK under the dash.
and, if you dont change both, it is also VERY LIKELY it will leak again. its very hard, almost impossible to flush all the old fluid out of the cylinders.
and what happens if you only change one, the fluid that is left in the other one, will contaminate the new one, causing it to leak again. ive seen it happen many times.

also, if you use other than OEM, you're taking a chance that it will leak again soon. maybe the aftermarket has gotten better, but after replacing MCs every 5 weeks, i decided OE was the way to go. im going on about 10 years, and TWO vehicles with those OE parts.

ive been down this road MANY MANY times. im speaking both from personal, and professional experience.

take it for what its worth.

Crawl under the dash and look at the back of the master...if its leaking, replace it. Then crawl under the truck and peel the boot back on the slave cylinder...if its full of fluid that leaked
out of the slave, then replace the slave. While hoses also leak, it's much less common than the cylinders.

Sounds good. I was thinking of just replacing both like you said. Thanks again.
