Hi folks.
I´m comming from the 3rd gen world into the 2nd gen one. I have just got a new to me, pristine looking 1994 2nd gen with just 135.000 Km on the clock (close to 84000 miles). It has 225/75/15 tires that I plan to change for some 31x10,5 that I have sitting around. From what I have read here, no lift should be required. Is that correct?
Also, this 4runner has the 22RE 4 cilinders engine. Will 31" tires be too much for it?
Cheers from Brazil,
Gustavo.

You should not have a problem with 31's, but depending on your gearing, 29 might be better.

I ran a 22RE with 31s on stock gearing for several years. It was a gutless turd on the hills, but I'm at 5000 feet. Lots of guys run that combo without complaints. Try it, just be ready to regear or switch back if it doesn't work for you.

Did just that this weekend. Put a set of Toyo Transpath MT 31" x 10.5 that I had laying around and didn't like it. It felt gutless indeed, but the real issue was that it rubbed bad on the front when steering all the way. And that was on the city only, not offroad. Went back to the 225's that it came with. I have also checked that plate under the hood for gearing information and its a 4.10.
Cheers,
Gustavo.

31s rubbed? That's odd, what's the backspace on your wheels?

The original alloys.
I´m not sure which backspace those have.

they should not rub with factory wheels. I have the 4.56 option with 31" tires from the factory.

They didn't on the wheelwells but on the frame, when full steering.

That's weird. I've got 31x10.5s on mine with the stock alloys and they've never rubbed on anything.

That's crazy, I wonder if your steering stops were opened way up? Lots of people run 31s on all flavors of factory and aftermarket wheels with no rubbing anywhere.

are you sure they were rubbing? I've ground through my plastic covers on the steering stops and full lock sounds horrible.

Well, hard to figure it out now, as I have returned it to the previous tires. I will have to test it again in another oportunity.
Thanks folks for all the advice.

Am I right in saying that due to the difference in axles between the leaf 1st gen to the ifs 1st gen that 10.5 inch tyres would stick out of the latter but be still inside the wheel well of the former ?
