Speed sensor?

Hey guys and gals,
I own a '92 4Runner, 3.0 A/T now the O/D light flashes only when I get over 40ish MPH but the shifting is really irregular.

So from a dead stop it'll rev up to about 2,500-2,700 then shift. But in the higher gears I need to let off the gas before it'll shift. Yeah if I keep on the gas it'll shift but it's over 3,000 RPMs

I checked the code and it's the 42 or vehical speen sensor #1 but from what I've read other people lost there speedometer. Mine works just fine but the odometer stopped rolling. Also I don't know if this matters but my dash lights dont work and "30" on the speedo is kinda melted.

Let me know what you guys think cause all the threads I've read have confused me greatly.

Thanks, Alex.

You might want to pull the inst cluster and see what the melting is all about.
The speedo could work even if the vss is bad. I'd you have cruise control and it doesn't work, that's another clue the vss is bad.

No the CC isn't working. Haha, had to test it on the way home cause I've never attempted to use it.
