This thread has me rolling.
It's stupid for any 1gen owner to dog on the 2gen's capabilities, it's practically the same truck we drive - 2door soft top leaf sprung rear vs 4door 3-link rear, not much of a difference. My only quibble with the 2gen is the look. It's not for me. If I were going to move to a 4 door platform, it'd be a 3gen or a 60-series, maybe a DC Taco.
That doesn't mean I'm going to stop flicking any of you crap any time soon, or that I won't giggle a little every time FoG gets his back up. It just means I don't mean it. ;)

I just had to take the chance to wind everyone up I love all 4runners they all have their ups and downs
what's wrong with a middle aged woman with a 3rd gen 4runner sounds like a sweet deal to me
so nobody is calling the 2nd gens the ugly fat kid
they had electric windows ,actual sunroofs, autos,
a friend of mine raced his wifes 93 4runner 3.0 in his 85 efi both 5speed and they where the same until 40mph the 93 pulled away

A second gen has pretty much the same front end and drive train as a 1st gen. The real difference between the 1st gen and 2nd gen is that the 2nd gen has a hard top and 4 doors. Depending on what you want, a hard top and 4 doors is a huge plus! The 2nd gen is a lot lighter (correct me if I'm wrong) and a little narrower than the 3rd gen. The fact that it is lighter makes it a bit better for offroading because it's less weight that the tires are having to pull up a hill or a rock. It's narrower so it can wiggle through tighter spots.

Just to clarify, third gens are actually slightly lighter than 2nd gens. I don't hate on 2nd gens abilities, although you can get the straight axle in the first gen!

It's lame. Similar to how a Jeep Wrangler holds value much stronger than a Cherokee, despite having the same drivetrain.
I like Tacoma's a lot, but they go for $2-4000 more than equivalent third gens, and, unlike third gens, were not built in japan, are not fully boxed in frames, and have frames that disappear. But the same powertrain.
Weeee resale value

I just traded the 4runner this morning for a CJ-7.
It already has a solid axle and a more powerful engine. I can still remove the top too

You're lying. Nobody with that CJ would trade for your 4Runner.

You mean no one with my 4runner will trade for that CJ?
I am lying. I just figured I would help Nate stir the pot.
