Can I assume that the 1988 FSM will work for the 1987?

First-gen FSM are very similar on mechanicals, but there are some differences especially on electrical. i.e., CSI control and some wire colors on 1988 are different from earlier version's.

A picture paints a thousand words.
Toyota components are bullet-proof. Issues often arise from poor wiring, assembly and/or maintenance. Suspect those first.
Next only to our senses, the multi-meter is the most important electrical diagnostic tool. Spend $6 at Harbor Freight or $$$ blindly replacing parts.

Web archive links still work
The links to the web archive above still work.
I have a 1986, 1987 and an early 1989 (first gen), and I haven't found any differences in the wiring between the 87 and 89, so the 1988 you can download should work for 99+% of your needs.
I have paper copies of the 1988 FSMs (both books, 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder) as well as a 1984 truck FSM that helps with some of the 1984-1986 wiring differences (diagnostic connectors, etc.). I'm in the Atlanta area and will let anyone look at them here or can PM pics of specific pages if anyone needs them.

How hard is it to get a hard-copy manual? Can Toyota dealers get them?

Dealers can't get them anymore. After ~2009 they went to an all electronic distribution system and can not longer order them. I got this from a friend who is the Service & Parts manager for a couple of Toyota/Lexus dealerships here in CO and it was backed up by another member here who works in a similar position at another dealership.
Seems to depend on the year and model as to how easy they are to come by. It took just over a year and nearly $500 to lay hands on a full FSM set for my 2006 4runner.
Here is the search that I used on eBay:
2006 toyota (4runner,4 runner) (service, repair, shop) (book,manual,manuals,rm00t1u*) -chilton -haynes -collision -pdf -dvd -"email delivery" -USB -"Owner's Manual" -"Training Manual" -"2003 2004 2005"
A quick breakdown on how that works: - 2006 toyota = search full listing for these terms
- (4runner,4 runner) (service, repair, shop) (book,manual,...) = any of the terms inside each of the () statements ie match on "4runner" or"4 runner"
- -chilton -haynes -collision -pdf -dvd -"email delivery" -USB -"Owner's Manual" -"Training Manual" -"2003 2004 2005" = Remove listings with any of these terms these terms. this got rid of a lot is crappy PDF/DVD listings with unsearchable scans and missing details etc...
Some other places to look:
Lots of false starts. Actually one company lists the full set for $699 on their website, (still as of today). They charged the CC and has never shipped the set. Over 7 months and they are still claiming they shipped after sending an email saying that the set was damaged and could not be sold. That fight continues...

I would love a 2002 FSM. The only downloaded one I found was 1996. I have a discount code through Staples and can get things copied there for 2.5c per black and white copy and binding is 35% off. As much as computers are quick, working on the car is easier with a book

Attached are the actual torrent files, that I d/led. I can't attach a Torrent file so I zipped them into one file. Just unzip and add the torrent to your favorite BT client.

New to the site and just picked up an 87 Truck. Would greatly appreciate anyone willing to share the goods for that year.

I have the 94 4runner service manual and electrical manual. I compiled them into one pdf from the files available at Toyota's service site. Just sent you a pm with the link to my Dropbox.
If anyone else needs a copy, just send me a pm.

Just took my 96-2002 FSM pdf to OfficeDepot to get it printed off for ease. Its 2153 pages so they had to bind it into 5 books (spiral bound). But I'd much rather have paper than my kindle in the garage swiping screens. due to the size it would have been around $375 but I have a discount code through my national professional organizations deal with OfficeDepot to bring it down to $97. Not too shabby for a printed FSM. I only wish it had a table of contents. These things just start out with "how to use the manual" and get right to torque specs, SSTs, fluids, etc. But I guess they're probably following along a computer that's guiding them to page numbers.
