Tire and Wheel swap

My son has a 2010 4Runner Limited that is wasting tires on the highway. The factory low profile 20"ers are not the best choice for extended highway use. They look good but the low profile causes the tire to heat and soften and creates excessively wear. At 45,000 miles these tires are worn out (for the second time) and replacing them this often is expensive with the recommended tire size beings only a Bridgestone offering.

Can a good swap be made with another Toyota rim size/tire combination such as that from a Tacoma 16"? My Tacoma gets way more miles and abuse with the smaller wheel/tire combination and higher profile with Michelins getting outstanding milage (once 125,000 on a set). I'm not sure if the 4Runner Limited might have bigger brakes and/or a different offset required than my 2001 Tacoma (300,000 miles).

Any advise would be helpful on swapping out this 20" combo with something more economical and milage friendly.

wheel sze has less to do with it than rubber compound. i would feel safe assuming trucks shipped with 20's(which i didnt even know they had btw) are also shipped with sport rubber... the whole point of big rims is to minimize side wall on the tire so the vehicle handles better. why go to that length and then put a tire on it that doesnt stick?

but id have to say that i agree with ^^ that 45k from a set of tires would not upset me.

What size are the front breaks? You can get smaller rims only if they still clear the breaks.

I think hes saying that at 45k, this is the second set of tires they are putting on the truck.

I would looking into other things besides blaming the tire size such as making sure they are rotated every other oil change and that they are properly inflated...

Also, you posted this in the 84-95 section, Might have better lick in the right section.

Were the Factory stock tires on the 2010 T4R, Dunlop Grand Trek? Those tires sucked as far as mileage. I barely got 45k miles on the ones that were on my Wife's LC, My buddy's Sequoia had the same tires and got the same mileage.

I've replaced them with Yokohama GEOlanders, which got me about 80K, and they still had about 5/32" of tread left.

Also are the 20" factory or aftermarket wheels?
