Buying 4Runner Advice!

Owned a 92 4Runner in the past, switched to a civic for commuting, and now looking to get back behind the wheel of a 4Runner! Budget's 5k. I've found a 1995 automatic v6 in great condition but my only concern is it has 237xxx miles on it. Owner recently had head gaskets and timing belt replaced. I know if taken care of 4Runners can go 300+ but I just wanted to hear some of your opinions. Think it will last me a few years without completely falling to pieces?

I just recently bought a 91 for $1500 with 317k on it. I put in a reman engine for another 3200 and I have a brand new truck. The body is imaculate so don't think this is a turd. I had been looking for a few months for mine. The one you seen sounds high for the price but that is based off of my location in Colorado. I wouldn't buy anything over 200K without the reserve cash to replace the motor in the near future. I have seen the price of a 4runner go from $2500- $5000 but the higher end ones had around 125k miles on them. I would say keep looking!!

The 3.0 with an auto trans would not be my first choice.
I like auto transmissions, just not with the 3.slo, it's kinda weak to begin with.
A later truck with the 3.4 would be better if you really want an auto trans.

I agree 100%. Look for a 96 or newer to get the 3.4. Good luck!

Thanks guys! No real preference as far as manual or auto trans, but I have heard great things about the 22re engine. Just got to be a little patient and wait for the right Runner to come around.

If ur looking at a 22re then u can get a 1st gen. The 22re has a reputation for bulletproof reliability. I own 2, the one in my 85 Hi-Lux has nearly 300K miles on it, the one in my 88 4RNR has nearly 240K miles! The 1st Gens are the best(IMHO). They are starting to become collectible so the prices are rising. Still u can get a really clean one for arnd $2-3 thousand. That'll leave u plenty of $ to do some mods right away. Happy hunting and keep us posted!
