I have a 94 4runner, the pinion bearing went, is there any were on the net were I could purchase the punkin' ( pinon, ring all gears and case) assy? been looking havent had any luck , all I found was ring and pinoin sets....
Also the case had a sensor in the top which we had to break to remove the gear case, any one know what that sensor is for ?

Here is a website for "RECYCLING CENTERS" (nice way of saying junkyard). http://car-part.com/

As far as the sensor on top goes, does the 4Runner have rear anti-locks? I think that was what the sensor was there for.

You can get complete 3rds from Marlin Crawler, InchWorm, and others. Better yet, check the For Sale section of BBSs like this one, used 4.10 3rds can be found for $50-75.

That sensor is probably for ABS, which adds to the cost.

Where in PA are you?

I found a 4wd center that is going to rebuild the 3rd for me for about 300 bucks, since there was no damage to the case or ring and pin. , thank god!!

is there any important tips putting that bugger back together?

If the R&P is good and it's just the bearing, $300 sounds like too much $ to me if you are going to pull the 3rd and carry it in.
If they are going to pull it too, then $300 is reasonable.

Who are you taking it to?

Unhappy bad news

Well I took the 3rd in they repaired the bearings ... now the kicker.. they are not able to get the pinion nut to hold ... due to the fact that when my father disassembled it he smashed the pinon threads beating on it with a hammer....
so now ... well I dont really know what my next step will be...
I took it to a place called capitol area 4 wheel drive, close to hershey pa.

My ratio is a 4.30, is this an odd ratio? for toyota... just wonder because when i was searching the junk yards for used 3rd's no one had it and seemed to think it was odd....

any one know if anybody's got one laying around that they would like to part with?

Thanks again for all your info....

Here's an easy chart to help determine axle ratios on 4R's that still have their third members attached to the body. You can use the chart to decode the placard usually found on the driver's side door jamb.

http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/other/4_axles.html

Hope this helps,
Mike in AR
