You might want to consider the route I took with a high-flow catalytic converter, and FlowMaster 40 muffler. I get a kick out of the growl it makes when I'm off roading. Let's them know I'm coming!

You can get an idea on how it sounds in this short video clip...

That's pretty cool, I've wanted a 1st generation since I was 9 years old. So to finally own one after going through so many cars, feels good. So this Runner is pretty dear to me lol. It helps that its a beast off road, and the top comes off!

If/when you decide to get the exhaust taken care of - and if you're not very far from Martinsburg WV - I strongly recommend --

Pennington's Auto Center located at - 1350 Edwin Miller Blvd Martinsburg, WV 25404‎ (304) 263-4911

They've done custom exhaust work on two of my vehicles - including my 93 4Runner - and the work is outstanding. Plus they don't try to rape you over the cost of parts and installation.

I do appreciate the suggestion Riff Raff, I decided to go to one of our local muffler shops. I took my own cat and they provided the rest for $145 bucks, which isn't bad at all. But on the way home, at one point I hit the gas and the truck was just shrieking, everytime I would hit the gas it would shriek louder and at a stop sign it just turned off on me. Took me a couple of tries to get it started again and its running good so far, weird huh? any ideas what happened fellas?

How do you mean shreaking? Loose belt or bad pulley bearing shreaking, or man on fire and running off the edge of a cliff shreaking?

The second one lol. It was pretty loud and as I would hit the gas it would get louder.

And the shreaking, screeching continues. Could it be the rear axle seals that are making that noise? or does it have something to do with the power steering belt? its strange, the noise will show up and last for a little while then disappear and so on. I plan on changing my axle seals tomorrow because the driver rear side is leaking, so I hope that takes care of it.

A seal wouldn't do that. A wheel bearing might. I still think it's a pulley bearing or belt, but you're the guy hearing it, not me.

Does the truck feel like it bogs or takes a power hit when it does it? Any lights on the dash? Steering get funky?

Nah I don't feel a power hit or anything like that and nope no lights on the dash. For instance I'll be driving and next thing you know I hear a sound like somethings loose or something needs to be tightened or greased and the sound stays for a little while. Every time I press on the gas the noise gets louder and louder, and then just disappears. So strange, Btw I recently had the timing chain fixed, you think the mechanic messed something up?

Um... maybe? If he didn't torque the front main bolt or camshaft bolt, I suppose one of them could be vibrating loose. The water pump and oil pump both have rotating bits, one of them could be bad. The alternator spins, power steering pump spins, power steering idler bearing spins, AC pump and AC idler spin. But that's just in the front end, you've also got bearings in the motor, there's the clutch, transmission, transfer case, differentials, wheel bearings, the truck is full of things that spin and any one of them could be causing your mystery noise.

Thing is I had him change the water pump and oil pump. I'm beginning to think he messed something up or forgot to do double check some things. I got no choice but to go talk to him about it tomorrow and hope he can find a solution for it. Thanks for your help man!

That sounds like a old belt me. I would check them and the tension because they could be a cause too
