It might bolt up, but electronically it's different to my knowledge. A decent headache to figure out. That's why when I did my swap I opted for a manual trans at the same time. Simplified it all. I thought I had read to keep a 3.4 auto swapped in you'd need to use the 3.4's auto trans as well. Which means you might as well just buy a 3rd gen at that point. Probably a good amount of fab work for crossmember, linkage and driveshafts. Whereas the manual from a 2nd gen is a direct replacement and bolts right up. Just need specific clutch components and the hydraulics/pedal brackets to convert.

Totally worth it

Wondering if anyone might shed some light on wiring for the swap, I've been working 12's all week and then an hour or two of work on my swap, and I know my mind is scattered but what connectors am I to re-pin? I know this will sound dumb, please just a simple response rather than a very universal 3.4 swap thread. I've gotten as far as the E9,E10, and E11 connectors and those came with the engine, the other two wires E12 and E14 need to be re-pinned from what connectors?! Recipient is a 95' 4Runner A/T and donor is a 01' 4Runner A/T, this will mark the 2nd time I've boughten the TIS subscription. I've done 2 engine swaps, but for older ford's, with no electronics like this level. Any help of PM's are much appreciated!

S.o.s. 3.4l swap wiring

Seeing if any one can send me any form of help/aid in the wiring aspect of the swap, been stuck on it, not a novice on general engine swaps, but never anything the advance. I just need to know what to re-pin and what to do!!

Any help or PM'S work, don't have too much time on a daily basis to put many hours in it, but lose sleep over where I'm going wrong.

3.0 to 3.4 engine swap

You should be more specific as to which wires you're having trouble with? The engine computer only needs to talk to the body in a few different spots: 12v ignition power, ground(s), maybe a constant 12v power, and then like an output for the check engine light, an input from the speedo for speed reference, an output to the tach (which also needs additional mods to work right) and then if you want to get real fancy the AC amplifier needs to talk to the computer also. Some of the engine sensors from the harness go directly to the body harness as well such as the oil pressure SENSOR (not a switch that the 3.4 comes with, but a SENSOR as found on the 3.0 if it has an actual gauge and not just a dummy light). And if you have ADD for 4wd that passes into the engine harness I believe depending on year.

So, furthermore, which wires are you confused over? The ones that link the computer to the body? That should only be ignition feed and ground at the minimum to at least get it running.

I wanted to add: the only wires you really need to focus on are those that connect to the body (which will be the big ass connectors besides whatever plugs into ECM). Then see which ones come off the engine harness and what they do, and re-pin into stock body harness connector to feed original purpose. Toyota uses codes like IG or CKP for various functions and they are almost always the same for multiple years. So to identify a wires purpose, looks at the lettered code on the diagrams and swap over

Yeah, so the wires left in my 95' 4Runner are the IH1/2 I believe, and wondering if I need to re-pin the to plug into the E12 and E14 plugs on my 5VZ-FE? E9, E10, and E11 all plug directly into my new engine, leaving me with two empty connectors (I went to a local Toyota junkyard and got the E12 and E14 connectors as I am currently led to believe, that I need to re-pin IH1 and IH2 into E12 and E14). Just need some form of validation, if I am correct to re-pin the IHs' into the E12 & E14. Or if I am completely off and I am fried from working!

I got the 2001 5VZ-FE engine, harness, and ECU/ECM, and some other things (EVAP., oil press. sender, etc. Do I need the body harness, or even the dash harness? I work at at Advance Auto, and am able to get a lot of these parts, just need to know what to get and what to do with where to go from here.

It is a 95' 3VZE A/T to a 01' 5VZ-FE A/T swap, engine is mechanically ready to go in. Sorry for the information splurge just looking for direction.

Thanks,

Eggslian

Here's the 5VZ-FE ECU/ECM with the two connectors I just picked up today. The other three plugs are coming from the engine harness. I am to re-pin those connectors with the body harness connectors in my vehicle?

These are the two connectors in my vehicle still do they need to be re-pinned?

Because I have the same ECU lay-out as the one pictured here, the E12 and E14 are body harness connectors?

3.0 to 3.4 engine swap

Are you using the 95 auto trans for this swap? If so, I'm not 100% it's compatable. It may totally be, I just don't have the experience with that particular aspect.

As far as re-pinning, your current vehicle body harness connections should be behind where the stock 95 ECU was behind passenger kick panel. The actual connector for these aren't what's necessarily important, it just had to make a connection. Meaning, you could literally just pull pins and connect them temporarily floating in the air and see what happens. It's a bit dangerous, but I don't know any other way. It's sort of guessing. Do you know what those IH wires are for? Like do they go to a sensor or a switch or something? I don't currently have access to a full diagram but you should be able to see where they terminate overall. And if they perform the same function, I don't see an issue.

You shouldn't need any other harnesses to make this work overall. It's all just wires. So as long as they go to the right places there's no need to run a whole new harness.

Tachometer requires a 10K ohm resistor soldered in on the tach gauge cluster. Google that and you should be able to find an image. I don't have one at the moment.

That's about all I can help

Also, do the e12 and e14 plug into the ECU or are those body connectors? From your pic it looks like it's to the computer directly

I can use either the 01' or 95' transmission, and okay I am in the correct path and on my way to getting it all done CORRECTLY!! I think!

How could I get ahold of him? I've been trying to find somebody with info on motor mounts to bolt my 88 3.0 into my 91 four runner. The mounts for the 88 motor are different from the 91 motor that was in it originally which was pulled by the previous owner. The mounts seem to be quite elusive which is actually why the previous owner sold the car.

The quote you posted is from 2013. Probably not gonna be much help.

You can call Yota Yard. They are a Toyota only salvage yard in Colorado I think and although they aren’t the chippiest to speak to, if given enough information they can probably find what you need. I would HIGHLY suggest emailing them images before just buying what they say they have... they have a lot of stuff. And it is a junkyard after all.

Otherwise, can you be more specific as to what you actually need? I was under the impression all 3.0’s were the same and therefore all their mounts should be the same. Unless you’re trying to put a 3.0 into a 4Runner that had a 4 cylinder?

I swapped mine from 22RE to 5VZFE. It was astoundly easy, if you have the donor rig (which I did) The whole engine and engine harness goes into the recipient vehicle almost untouched. You will have to deal with starter and battery, almost nothing else.

We took the body harness connection to the ECU from the donor vehicle and pulled the entire harness out. The connectors have just a few wires that are needed. This is from memory:
3 for the OBDII connector
power from the MAS to fuel pump (circuit opening relay)
starter
ignition
CEL (yes, dammit, I wanted that CEL to work!)
I know theres one or two others Im forgetting. These all were tapped into the correct locations in the 86 wiring harness. Only difficult one was circuit opening relay, had to wire up a relay and plumb it into the fuel pump circuit.

I did not do the wiring design, Nick (Bluetoy) out of Skyline, Al did that, and he has all the notes on it. He told me what to connect where, and it all worked on the first try. The wiring part of the swap, with *very* intimidating pics, is here: Toyota Engine Swap - RCRC Forum - Page 2

ETA: I forgot, the speed sensor (the 4cyl actually has a connection in the instrument panel that works for this purpose) and the tach - I had to get a 4cyl tach to 6cyl feed converter box to address that.
