uh oh IFS :(
my front end apparently got sick of going into 4WD. everytime i pop it into 4H or 4LO is rolls for about 2 feet, then this really UGLY sound comes from the front "axle". i had a buddy of mine take a peak while it was doing this, and i guess that my transfer case is spinning the front driveline, but my front end isnt, therefore is litterally grinds the front gears. stumped? check this. ever since it started doing that, this other noise started occuring while in 2H. it almost sounds like a blown shock, but its not. and guess what? it comes from the IFS UV axles. hmmmm. im really starting to dislike IFS. but if anyone has any clue on what could be possibly be going on, let me know. By the way, its a 93 T4R V6 231K. oh, joy.

Are the half shaft boots torn or leaking lube?

my half boots are torn, both of them on the inner and the right outer.. and i had no idea that they held any sort of lubricant!!! Are these the culprit? i flushed out my ADD and now it works when i drive straight, but it clicks when in turns.. so im guessing those are it!

The boots protect the joints, when they tear crap gets inside and ruins the axles so lesson learned, check your IFS axle boots from time to time.

I've had a torn boot before,, was in that shape when I bought the 4R. Luckily, I caught it before any damage was done. Now at every oil change, I spray all the boots ( all 4 on the axels and the steering boots) with spray silicone ( NOT WD-40). No problems, since.
As far as the flushing goes, he may mean he flushed the vacuum lines that work the actuators. ( just a guess) If the vacuum lines were clogged, I'd be wondering where the offending plug-up came from.

SO.. i replaced my CV axles thinking that in fact, the joints were broken and preventing me from using my 4WD without that clanking noise. Removal of them did prove that the inner joints were broken, so i thought that replacement would fix the problem. haha. put the new ones on (after 6 hours.. blah) took it to the street, popped it into 4LO and drove straight.. so far so good.. came to a right turn.. clank clank clank. still non-functioning 4WD. still does the same thing. oh well it needed replaced anyways. Now on to the next possible cause.. messed up steering linkage. Im in the middle of replacing the whole steering linkage setup from my 90 to the 93. im thinking that because all of it is "messed up" (according to several dealerships) and my alignment is all off that somehow someway its cauing this problem. I guess we will see. What else besides this would coause this problem?

I figured I might touch up on this problem, possibly giving someone else who might have this problem an idea. IFS sucks. Turns out that my 4WD problem was a combination of the sleeve for the ADD and completely grinded gears in the front diff. My parts T4R had a front diff that match my old gears and when I got done throwing that in, waa-laa! No problems.
