WANT INPUT: Adding another 4R...a 2nd Gen.
From a friend, 2nd owner. It's extra car/truck #4 for him. Super clean. Rarely offroad. Well maintained. 148k miles, but he said there was some sort of dealer done recall on the engine. Any ideas? Any other things I should keep an eye out for? Only thing I can see is that the transfer case may have a slight leak. I see this info on the Toyota owners site (at 142k):
WARRANTY WORK ~|~PERFROM 50N RELAY ROD RECALL ~|~ ~|~PERFORMED RECALL
Name Part # QTY
JAR ASSY, WASHER 8533189142 1
ROD, STEERING RELAY 0400470135 1

There was a recall done on some of the 3.0s for head gasket failure a long time ago.

I believe that's what he may be referring to. Strange, I'd think it'd be listed under the Toyota owners site, since it would've been a dealer service TSB.

'Relay rod' recall relates to a possible flaw in the main steering link. Google it for details.

Yeah looks like the dealer took care of that issue. Hoping I've checked it out well enough not to have major issues.

It's a 20 year old truck. If it doesn't have issues now, it will soon. That's part of the charm of having old iron, so make sure you're prepared for that. Keeping these trucks on the road can be expensive if you're not handy with a wrench.

If your truck hasn't had this recall done they still will, I know somebody who had it done last month.

Yep we don't mind wrenching a bit. Just not too much. It'll be good practice for when we find our dream 1st Gen.

Yeah that's been done. Good to know the big T still takes care of those old recalls.

That looks like a really nice truck, no typical sag in the rear suspension either. As long as the head gaskets have been done and the truck has been regularly maintained it will probably go another 100k. Rads can be pricey, but ours only had a tank leak start after 20 years. Factory parts are starting to disappear. You might check the fuel system(pump, seals, o2 sensor, regulator, etc..) for issues, as some of these trucks don't like the ethanol in the petrol. Best of luck with it.
regards

Thanks for the input. It's been serviced at the dealer most of its life, so I figure most everything's been looked over. I'm pretty hardcore about maintenance so I'll be flushing everything when we get it & constantly checking things. It's got some kind of lift but the owner's not sure what. I'll have to post up suspension pics so you guys can tell me what its got.

He's asking 2500, but will probably go down a little. Most comps in our area average 3500-4000. So, a good deal. Especially since most 2nd gens for sale need a lot of work. In fact, we only decided to buy it since we knew it was well maintained & just couldn't pass up a good deal LOL.

At $2500, you're probably getting a solid deal--that's not a bad price no matter where you're from!

If it's a 5-spd, maybe I'll give you a call in a few months and offer to clear some of your parking space (LOL)!
