1990 4Runner - Shocks and Springs

My 1990 4cyl 4wd 4runner has 390,000 km on it. I know that it requires new shocks. Is it advisable that I also replace springs (the truck isn't necessarily sagging). Do springs typically need to be replaced. Also is there a particular shock I should consider - was thinking of the monroe sensa-track (37030/37033). Any thoughts?

I like Bilstein shocks and Moog coil springs for the rear. With that level of kms, the original suspension is probably pretty tired. The Moog springs were a huge improvement on our 1990 4runner (4wd, V6). You might consider replacing the control arm bushings with urethane units at some time, if you want to tighten things up.
regards

Thank you for the quick response. I will look for the bilsteins. I assume new springs on front would be appropriate as well? Could find the Moog springs for back but didn't see that for front. It was also recommended that I replace upper ball joints and some tie rods as well as idler arm.

No springs up front, torsion bars. I upgraded ours to 25mm Sway-a-way units. These will stiffen up the ride a bit, so, take due caution. We liked it because it improved the road handling characteristics and tracking on the highway. I would definitely replace the upper and lower ball joints. Replaced ours when the truck had about 80k on it and it made a huge improvement. You might see if you can find Japanese made ball joints(better quality then china units).
I purchased the urethane bushings through suspension.com, no affiliation, just satisfied customer.
regards

Thanks again. For the control arm bushings is it the front or rear or both you suggest?

Both, and you'll really feel the benefits. If you go urethane, I prefer to lube them with a mix of copper anti-seize and mobil 1 syn marine grease. Use the stuff like your not paying for it. ; )
