Good info on the solenoids. I'll be doing this soon on my 85.

it's the thermostat dummy!

Well, I finally talked with a Toyota mechanic. The first thing he suggested was to replace the thermostat. I did and it seems to be driving fine. He explained, if the thermostat isn't working properly it can be keeping the engine to cool. This prevents OD from kicking in (it's a feature, not a bug.)

Lesson learned, start with the cheapest, easiest fix. I had read about this thermostat thing but it just didn't make sense to me at the time. Live and learn.

Sorry to jack your thread, but trying to get an answer. I have a 1992 4Runner. First gear is there but not much torque or power. All other gears it shifts fine. On the interstate it will run 75-80 mph them come to a hill and will slow down. Ran a diagnostic on it and got a code 14 and O/D wash flashing (code 64).
64 reads bad number 3 solenoid. But sure if it is this or a torque converter.
Has anyone had this problem? If so please let me know.

Thanks

You can buy all 3 solenoids on Ebay for $60
https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F281781703567

Or go to the dealer and pay $75 each.

I'd drop the pan and replace the solenoids..problem persists than you know it's the torque converter...if not you know it was a solenoid...which is way easier to replace than dropping the transmission for the t/c

Will update when installed.

Thanks

@ClintR2 that may have been the incorrect link.
Hoping you double checked it was for the A340H transmission. There are several A340's out there and some sellers don't specify the A340H

@Dropzone
Where exactly can you tell what model transmission you have?
I have a plate in the side of it but does not read like any numbers listed.

@Dropzone
It is a A340H. Found on the vim plate in door.

Here is a picture of the solenoid I received.
They read on the box that they work for
A340 E/H/F
https://photos.app.goo.gl/p7MU6xGqpkCnZG4y8

Hopefully they will work

Got it all installed.
Not much metal shavings in the pan. Just very fine shavings and like dust.
Truck had more power in the low gears.

However is is reading a code 41. TPS . Changed it and not difference.
Car runs very ruff and idling high. Adjusted the timing and still no difference.
The check engin light is off but still runs very bad.

I am stumped.

Any idea what it could be??

Bad TPS or widening harness??

your throttle could actually be out of position..

4Crawler has a pretty could write up on trouble shooting the TPS
Toyota 22RE Throttle Position Sensor

you made want to try this first though, it is a quick and easy to do.
Before re-adjusting or replacing clean throttle body, reset ECU by disconnecting battery or removing 15 amp EFI fuse for at least 1 minute.

I am having shifting difficulties in my 95 automatic tranny. The engine revs to 4000, mph slows and it won’t shift easily. I think it’s my shift solenoids, been researching the Axiom tech ones. They worked well for you? I’m ho-I gotta it is my shift solenoid
