92' A340H shift Solenoid Help!

I've recently been having the stereotypical problems of shotty transmission shift solenoids in my 92' A340H tranny. O/D stops working on the highway, takes a while for the O/D to kick in, O/D kicks in and out, etc. I've been doing a lot of research on swapping them out and parts and I really want to make sure I get the right solenoids and not waist money on getting the wrong kit. The pics below are a collection of forums and video's going through the process and saying it's a A340H tranny. If this is the case why do all the shift solenoid look different and have different bracketing?! Really looking for some help on this matter and I want to buy the parts and fix ASAP. Any feedback helps, thanks!

Here are some links of different tranna shift solenoid kits and they are also different:

Has someone else done this solenoid swap with a 92' A340H specific tranny that could point me into the right direction? HELP!

You should have an A340H, to verify look for the trans code at the bottom of the VIN plate. Then order parts for whichever model you have.
Just cause all those pics say they are one model doesn't mean they're right.
The main difference between the A340H and A340F is in the t-case section.

It's been over a year since I did mine. two were identical, one was a little bigger and a different color. It was kind of a universal kit but the solenoids fit their place. I just did one at a time.

Thanks Clone of mean! When you did your swap was it also for a 92' A340H? Did you buy your kit from a website or a local shop? If it was a website do you remember what the site was?

Shift Solenoids

Replaced the Solenoids in my 92 today. I got my kit from Axiom Technologies and they give you the brackets for early and late model valve bodies. Real simple change out.

it was a 94 A340H. I bought them from a local transmission supply house. Think they were around $180. If you back to my first few posts they're all about doing the swap. Good luck

did it fix your problem. i know mine was taking for ever to go into od and sometimes it would never go. found out it was a slightly stuck open t stat keeping the engine temp just below operating temp and keep the od from going on. makes sense since od did work if i drove it for like an hour at a time

Solenoids

Mine worked great, no issues at all. I had gotten to the point where I had to manual shift 100% of the time and the converter wouldn't lock up either. I'm running 32-11.50 BFG's and now at 70 mph the tach says 2550 rpm which before it was almost 3300 rpm...better gas mileage here I come !!!

I had to do the same thing for 5 years or so. My kid took the runner to college and the transmission ended up puking fluid on him halfway there. Somehow it was 4qts overfilled. After I drained and refilled it, the tranny shifted completely normal and slowly went to crap again. Wish I could have figured that out.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! I'm ordering the new solenoids today and hopefully they come in later this week so I can install that this weekend. I'll keep you posted.

Hey guys! The solenoids were a success! I also replaced the thermostat and it's running as it should and everything seems to be back to normal.

Just as a note, on the 1992 4Runner, you WILL need to drop the sway bar to be able to drop the transmission oil pan. Other models you can get away with it, but the 92' you can't. My sway hasn't been touched probably since it was originally purchased to the bolts were pretty well rusted to the frame.

Anyway, I have this forum to thank for all the help and information I've been gathering about solenoid replacements. I ended up using these: More Information for ATP RE5 and they fit great in the 92'

Cheers!

New to forum

Glad to find this thread. I'm about to try this on my 96 4Runner (A340F.) Any advice? Sounds pretty straight forward. I'm having the same problem, shifts in and out of OD. Otherwise the trans is smooth as butter.

Newb question, I was trying to look at Clone of the Mean's previous posts. How do I do that? I don't see any link to his posts on his profile page??

Thanks

Click on his name, you'll get a dropdown, select "Find More Posts".

Are you sure you have an A340F? '96 ought to be an A340H.

Solenoid swap

I swapped out the three shift solenoids today on my '96 and it seems to have made the problem worse? Now my 4Runner won't go into overdrive at all. Before it was an intermittent problem, now it seems permanent. It's running at a higher RPM band as well.

I guess I will put the old ones back in tomorrow and move on. What drives me crazy is there is no check engine light, no indication there's a problem. It will simply switch out of OD occasionally or refuse to go into OD? Also, in the lower gears sometimes it seems to be "searching" for the right gear.

I would take it to a mechanic but they always want to see or hear what's wrong. 90% of the time she drives fine?
