Can't ind actuator
I have been looking for over an hour to find the actuator for the 4x4 on my 1988 4runner. I am starting to doubt that this truck has an actuator could it be a cable instead? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Keep in mind she is an 88... Thanks

Does your runner have the ADD system? If so it is on the long tube next to your front diff. It has a fork inside it that moves side to side.

Hi.
From what I've read, I don't think you have the ADD system, you indeed have automatic locking hubs. According to 4x4wire Toyota started using the ADD system in 1990 in 4Runners. If this is the case you will never find the actuator, that only came with ADD.
The automatic locking hubs have a reputation of being problematic. Your best bet is finding a pair of Aisin manual locking hubs for IFS and swap them.

Based on what research? I've never heard of an ADD hub failing. Manual hubs give you control of when the hubs lock, but there is nothing wrong with the ADD hubs.
The 4x4 is engaged by vacuum lines that attach to the diff and moves the before mention fork in the tube from the diff to the CV axle. Their is no "actuator" per se.
To the OP, can you explain a little better what you are talking about?

I know a flange is as reliable as can be. But there is a difference between automatic locking hubs and the ADD system, they are not the same. The question is, which one does the op have? Again, according to 4x4wire Toyota started using the ADD system in 4Runners in 1990 but I could be wrong.

Either way, where did you read that the ADD or otherwise was problematic?
There is no need to swap to manual hubs or defeating the ADD without reason. I swapped to manual hubs and defeated the ADD to improve offroad performance when rock crawling. That being said, if ain't broke, don't fix it.

Here's a good source of info:
http://www.off-road.com/trucks-4x4/f...tem-19259.html
It does mention problems with the automatic hubs, but that is the only source I have found for issues with them.

Replacing Toyota AUTO Hubs - ORN is the first one I found but just google toyota automatic locking hubs and you will see why people swap the autos for the manuals. The way they work sucks too.

Your t4r does not have a 4wd actuator. It is not add either it has the crapy auto locking hubs and when you shift to 4wd and begin to drive they lock in. If you intend to wheel this truck much at all swap to Manuel hubs the autos don't work for crap. Toyota only used them 87 to 89 and then they thru out the design.

Just to clarify, I believe Toyota used automatic locking hubs on some trucks from 1984 through 1988 for pickups and 1989 for 4runners We just swapped autos for manuals on a friend's 85 pickup, the internals shattered in pieces and damaged the spindle threads, we had to replace the spindle too. The truck is stock and has always had factory size tires. That's how reliable they are.

4x4 still failing
Alright I just did a ton of research on this and i got confused and thought the ADD and auto-hubs were the same. Sorry bout that but anyway I do still have a problem the hubs may not work I can't be certain about that but i do know something isn't engaging. The 4x4 light on the dash doesn't come on anymore and it used to work the whole shabang worked. Now none of it works i believe the L4 works but only in the rear. So what should I do tomorrow I'm putting it in the garage so I can work on it away from the cold. Any advice as to how to get it to engage again? Could it be something in the T case?
