Craiglist Guy Offering Lots!
I'm always curious as to what I can get for my 4runner. It's stock, as many of you know, and with a few small issues. Nonetheless, I made it very clear on CL these issues. The thing has 216xxx miles and still I'm getting big offers here in california.
One guy offered me 4K and two others are almost "bidding". They're increasing their bids by the 50's.
I finally had to tell them that it was sold.
This really shocks me. I didn't think I could get so much for my runner. Now I'm wondering if I should sell and get a 1st gen like i've always wanted??

Hmmm, looks like I might need to come down there when it's time to sell mine.
Actually up here for a good 4runner the floor seems to be about $4k, and then some discount off that for issues. When I wash and wax mine up, it's one of the nicest stock 4runners around of that age. The guy that helped buy my '98 a couple years ago claimed his was the best, but he also cheated a bit with a new paint job and a carpeted cover on the dash....the only thing of mine that was cracked at the time.
So, why were you listing yours? A 1st gen would mostly solve my wanting a pickup a couple times a year, or a small trailer, but with a family and having fishtailed on the ice at the top of 431 once, I'll eventually be getting something with airbags and anti-slid technology. But it will probably be a babied one from the SF bay or Sac.
I'm in no rush now, and am barely putting on 3k/year. But if I happened across a nice '06 4runner or tacoma tomorrow at an awesome price, there's even odds I'd be buying it.

I think I really know why it's valued as such. Around here, most runners are junk crap. People who drive em are the 5th owner and beat the crap out of em. The yotas obviously tolerate it, but cosmetically, they are horrible rust buckets with 3 different brands of tire on each wheel. I guess when a nice one like mine arises from the ash, it's like a needle in a haystack and people jump on it. Even dealer's trucks are junk too.

^You are dead on sir... When a clean one comes up for sale ppl go crazy. Probably cuz its just so rare. Down here in SoCal it's equally nuts. I turned down an offer of $5500 two weeks ago.

LOL! I bet our average one here is worse than there, even including those in SF.
I bought mine in the bay area now 9 years ago, at 95k, for $5100 I think. And it was clean, one of those where this was the 2nd owner, and he put down different floor mats over the factory ones, and had seat covers on it. He even discounted it a little because the power antennae didn't work and the cd player didn't like some cds. But he had some idiosyncrasies too, like wanting me to pay via wire transfer even though we were at the same company and he had known my boss for 15 years.
Now with an extra 65k on it, and 9 years, but no crashes and generally taking good care of it, it's probably worth around $4000. Now that's a depreciation cycle I can live with!

I paid $2500 for mine back in '99. Bought it from one of my best friends who was the original owner. The only reason he sold it was he bought a toyhauler for Glamis and needed a full size pickup. 3 months later he was bugging me to buy it back. Right...!
