Head gaskets, OR ... ?

First post, thanks. I've owned a Tacoma for 10 years now (almost to 200,000 miles), and just bought my first 4Runner. It's a 94, cost very little money, and was intended to be my wife's kid-mobile. It's the 3.slow 3FZ-E

All looked well at first: All the service records going back to the original purchase receipt, my mechanic (am independent Toyota guy) said it looked great. It has 272k miles, but the price was right.

After a week this thing has eaten a quart of coolant, a half quart of oil (not such a big deal to me), and failed emissions in Denver for hydrocarbons (unburned gas out the tailpipe) and carbon monoxide.

Mechanic says it might be head gaskets. I have a receipt for those being done 60k miles ago, along with water pump and timing belt of course.

I've noticed only the slight oil under the car after it's been running and then parked. I've heard coolant burns up if it's leaking into the engine compartment. I'm worried it's leaking into the chambers, though. Leak test and new plugs are coming next week.

Any thoughts?

Sure sounds like a blown hg, but best to be sure before you fly off the handle. Get a block test kit to check your coolant for exhaust residue, or have your mechanic do a leakdown test.
