Unhappy 2nd Gen evaporator replacement

Hey all! I'm new to the forum and glad to be here. I have already found a bunch of good info through searches, but on this question I am stumped.

Has any of you replaced the evaporator in your truck yourself? I am faced with the prospect of going it on my own or paying my mechanic somewhere around $800 for the service. I am opting for the former, but it depends on the degree of difficulty.

I have been told it's a bear to get to, but where exactly is it located in the 2nd Gen? I know behind the dash, but I'm looking for more precise info. Also, my system is empty, as the reason I need the replacement evaporator is a leak, but are there any other items to keep in mind if I tackle this one?

Any help or advice is appreciated.

By the way, as my signature says (if I did it right) I have a 1992 SR5 V6 5 spd 4WD with just over 200K miles, and it's a lovely midnight blue color. We've been together now for 8 years and I hope to be able to pass this truck on to my now 21-month old son when he comes of age.

Thanks again.

I think he means the air conditioner evap coil... the one the interior fan blows on to produce cold air -- not anything in the engine bay.

I've never been behind the air ducting in my 92. So,I'm not much help on how to get to it.

I remember when I took out the stock single DIN cassette player in my 93 to put in the stock double DIN cassette/CD stereo, I had to take out the glove box. behind there is a whole lot of duct-work, perhaps the coil is around there?

Yes, it's back there somewhere. I was really hoping that somebody here could figuratively hold my hand and walk me to its specific location, or perhaps offer some guidance if the evaporator replacement has actually been attempted by a layman.

Thanks.
