Coolant temp sender resistor?

While putting my new 3VZE in my '92 T4R I noticed that someone had put a 2k Ohm resistor in the circuit of my coolant temp sender. They literally just crimped down male and female terminals on the resistor to add it in...surely that isn't stock? I haven't read anything about it on one of these so what gives? Any ideas why it was there? And should I leave it/replace it or remove it?

Could be the sensor was replaced and the new one wasn't accurate.
If it works, leave it. Maybe slip some heat shrink tubing over it to protect it.

Ok I just wasn't sure what was going on with it. And yea I wrapped it in electrical tape to help protect it
