my 2nd gen resto/slow build

Hey guys, after owning a 94 runner for a few years (1.5 of which it has sat in the drive.) I decided to get off my butt and get her back on the road again, might even take her off the pavement!

Basically I will be posting progress pics and what not here, hopefully you will all catch the novice mistakes I am sure to make.

Firstly I 'procured' a copy of the FSM for the 2nd gen then got to turning wrench this afternoon.

First thing I felt like tackling was the blown axle seal on the rear passenger side. It had been leaking for a while undiagnosed, and after doing some learning, I realized this must be remedied in order to ensure roadworthyness.

Here is the axle as it sits tonight.

I plan to replace the seals and bearing while I am in here, may replace the wheel cylinder as well. It is pretty greasy and I am unsure if cleaning it would suffice.

I am guessing that I will need to talk to my mechanic tomorrow to see if he presses off bearings. I'm unsure of what all parts I need, or where to source them. More research to be done tomorrow. Updates as they progress.

Hey guys, wondering if I am being hosed by the stealership on parts for the axle rebuild.

They want $96 for the wheel bearing. PLUS $60 for the spacers. Add on a replacement ABS Gear for $57.

Aftermarket bearings are looking to be around $50 including spacers.

I plan to go OEM on the seals as they are nicely made, but is the greatly increased cost of the OEM wheel bearing worth it?

Also, if you guys know of any reputable sites that carry oem parts for less than the exorbitant prices I was quoted I would be most greatful to hear about it.

Thankfully the autoshop only wants $40 to press the old bearing off and new one on.
