1986 Stripes Decals
I'm hoping some 1st Gen gurus can enlighten me.
I'm thinking about buying this 4R but looking at the decals/striping I'm trying to think back when these were new. Seems like I remember this being on some 4R's but maybe my 80's brain cells are deceiving me.
I've searched some of the reproduction guys and google images, coming up blank. It looks factory in the layout... just doesn't look aftermarket to me.
Factory or aftermarket?
I'm debating keeping the retro stripes.. certainly has an 80's look to it or going all white..which is my first instinct. Kinda retro cool though...kinda.
Personally, all white with some nice Method wheels would suit me better. This would be kind of a shop rig to play with.

Definitely not factory, but lots of 4Runners had decals applied at the dealer so it could still be original.
I'd trash them, that looks hideous.

Your instinct is correct. Get rid of the stripes! I can't stand those dopey stripes toyota insisted on putting on. In the southwest they just get baked by the sun and look like crap. Plain white with some Methods will look sick. Post pics.

The triple stripe on the bottom looks like Sharpline's roll of stripes from the 80's, and I believe that hockey stick graphic was also theirs back then too.
Most of the graphic/stripe shops back then ordered their stuff from Sharpline and a couple other places, and dealers would have the stripe shops come in and stripe stuff for them for pennies, then turn around and upsell the customer for hundreds! I know, its what I did back in the late 80's for Trim Design of Central Iowa! Boss would send me to several dealerships with the shop van loaded with crap like that to install on new vehicles once or twice a week if we were slow. I'd walk the lot, find stuff that looked boring, install stripes or graphics, and even that plastic chrome panels for lower parts of doors, then bill the sales dept. for the work I did.
As for those, you could easily have a local sign or vehicle wrap shop pattern those graphics, take photos and measurements, and once you are done painting it, they can create and install them for ya. You could also change up the colors and type of vinyl to make it look better too, its what I did with the stock graphics on my truck, just took the stock graphics and made a drop shadow for the stripes, changed the colors, printed it on metallic vinyl and came out with something I think looks pretty damned good!
