Parking Brake Cable Replacement

1987 4Runner 22re 5 speed

My parking brake cable snapped today at the handle (oh well) and I'm trying to track down a new cable is harder than i thought. If you search my year make and model for a cable in an auto parts supplier (napa, advance, autozone, oreilly, rockauto) you are given the parts for the left rear and right rear cable, but NOT the front cable. However, if i change the year to 1985, and perform a similar search i am given the front cable ONLY. The compatibility recommendations lists solid axle 4runners and 4x4 pickups

My question is posed so that i and future searchers can have a direct answer to the question "are the front parking brake cables exactly the same for the 1st gen 4runner across all years?"

I could buy one, give it a try, and report. But i figure one of you guys has already gone through this.

Edit: Forgot to mention, i contacted the dealer earlier today and he quoted me $82.07 Part# 46410-35340

Update: I have removed the old Parking Brake Cable. due to it's curviness and general disregard for my authority, i was not able to take an "exact" measurement of it's length.
Rough measurements of the dimensions:

Overall length 70.5"

Shielding Length 53" (did not know from which point to begin measuring, these values may actually be the same)

These differ slightly from some of the measurements i have seen for the 1985 4Runner parking brake cable which are

Overall Length 70.56"

Shielding Length 51.42"

I visually compared the mounting points of the two cables, they appear to have the same mounting configuration.

Dorman Part# C93742 $32.48 shipped from Amazon

So the parts stores will sell just the rear right/left lines?? I put a later model axle in my 85 and need some longer line.

The parts stores will only recognize the left and right parking brake cables for the 86-89 model years. My issue is with the front cable, going from the parking brake handle to the pivot point just forward of the gas tank.

If you are having an issue with your 1985 left/right cable length working with a later model axle, the later model Left/Right cables should work for you, seeing as the front cable appear to be the same length.

Only took me about 2 minutes to find the proper cable on toyotapartsdeal.com, here's a link for future reference:

46410-35330 - Toyota Parts Deal

From here, you can find alternate parts using your google-fu.

Couple of things here, the Dorman part you listed looks like it may not have the proper end on one side, so you may need to do some modifications to that part to make it work. I've had to do this before with other stuff, not a big thing, but it may not be just an easily swappable part. Price is good though, at about half the cost of a new cable, I wouldn't mind the issue of having to modify the part slightly!

And just an FYI, I ordered a bunch of gaskets through toyotapartsdeal.com last Tuesday and got them today! Came from a toyota dealership in Corona, CA, pretty fast and prices were half the cost of my local dealership, and I got them 2 days sooner than the dealership said they would!

Thanks for looking that up for me! I neglected to mention that I had searched that website and found the very part you mentioned! I am pretty frugal, and don't like the idea of paying allot of money for something i know isn't a heavily engineered part.

Once the part comes in i will take comparison picture of the two parts and post them here so that, if there are differences, they will at least be documented for future searchers.

Sorry for the delayed response but incase someone searches this in the future; rockauto.com then 1992 Toyota Pickup Extended Cab Parking brake cable. ACDELCO 18P2879 {#19305544} that's the one.

The rear cables will be different because the rear axle gets wider with the shift to IFS. Good to hear that the fronts are the same.

Didn't know that! That explains the issue that @txlonghorn85 was having.

Just get the transfer case parking brake kit from All Pro, that'll eliminate those pesky brake cables to the rear!

All kidding aside, the stock parking brake has always been pretty weak, you gotta yank on the handle to really get it set, especially if you're on a 20º+ incline on a trail.

Love the kit! It takes very little pressure to hold the truck in place, and I've literally set the brake on a 30º incline (going by the inclinometer gauge in the truck) and gotten out with no worries at all. It does take some getting use to though, as you have driveline slop with your parking brake, but its still a LOT better than the stock drum brakes!

That's pretty impressive... something to consider for the future! That looks like a very well thought out design and I wouldn't mind throwing it on if price were not an issue, but $450 can go a long way towards my eventual solid axle swap

Well, it wasn't exactly perfect, as I had to modify some of the brackets, but its a fantastic kit once installed!

I only replaced mine because the parking brake always sucked on my truck, and I wanted something that would actually hold without pulling every bit I could out of the handle. Now, I can literally click it 3 times once I feel it clamp down on the rotor, and it will hold the truck well.

It wasn't that much when I got it, but I remember it still being expensive, maybe it was 300 bucks back about 10 years ago?

God damn I'm getting old...

Front parking brake cable for 4runner

Does anyone know where I can purchase the square retaining clips that secure the ends of the front parking brake cable? Auto Zone, Advanced Auto Parts, O'Reilly's were no help. I hsve a 1992 4runner SR5. Thanks.
