Transmission control solenoid? O/D flashing?

Just recently when I would start up my automatic Trans '93 4runner, V6, 2WD, when I would put it in drive and press the gas, it would rev up but not move...maybe just barely, very slowly. I would shift it all the way down to 1st and it would go normally and then I would go to 2nd then into drive and it would be fine the rest of the time I would be driving, even when I came to a stop and then accelerated again. NOW, its driving like that all the time. I start off in 1st, and as I accelerate, in to 2nd and then drive. When I come to a stop, I have to do it all over again. Its like I'm driving a manual transmission now. All the while, the O/D light on my dash is flashing. I havent been driving it often and when I do, its usually up the street or so. nothing changes of the trucks warmed up or not, it has enough TMF, reverse works fine.
A friend of mine said its the transmission control solenoid. its an easy enough fix from what I can see and what I've found online, and it wont be too expensive. I'm wondering if this problem sounds familiar to anyone and if they agree that is what the problem could be. Probably gonna order the parts tomorrow so any advice ASAP would be greatly appreciated!

Have you pulled the transmission codes? Do a search for that to determine how to pull codes for the transmission (not the engine, they are different) and see what its telling you.

I'll do that right now. I really have no idea what people mean by "getting/pulling the codes" I'll do a search. Thanks!

yeah, still kind of in the dark about how to get the codes. I guess a parts place can test it for me? that what several websites are saying.

Someone correct me here if I'm wrong, as I don't have an auto trans and can't test before posting this.

To get transmission codes from the ecu, short the two terminals under the hood at the diagnostic port, terminals should be TE1 and E1, just as you would do to get the engine codes. Make sure the O/D switch is in the ON position (pressed in).

Count your flashes from the O/D light, NOT the check engine light. Long flashes are your 10's column, short flashes are your 1's column. Eg, six long flashes, followed by 3 short flashes would be code 63.

Here, I found the pdf file covering the trans codes and test guideline:
