Wierd power loss problem....

So I just took delivery of my 88 runner.

While driving it home I figured out it has a very wierd hesitation or maybe power loss. In every gear, up until what Im going to say about 4,000 rpms, its dead...it will barely get out of it own way, then once it hits about 3,000 maybe 4,000 rpms it takes off. Almost like you hit the nitrous. I just got the truck tonight, drove it home and looked it over. Nothing seems to be unplugged, no CELs, Im going to do the basic tune up stuff, plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter and oil change. But is there somthing that usally happens to these trucks? Maybe a common problem that I cant find? Im new to the toyota world.

I bet a tune up would be a good place to start.

It sounds like a bad wire or wires to me, but I'd start with the whole cap, rotor, plugs, and wires routine and see what happens.

Also check all vacuum lines and look for leaks around the throttle body.

Btw, are we talking a 22r/re or 3.0 here?

22RE.

Discovered somthing today when I got to work. The o2 sensor sint in the exhuast. Its still attached to a old piece of pipe that was cut off of the stock exuasht system, and its wrapped around the frame. So Im going to put a new o2 sensor bung and sensor in.

I also called a friend whos a Toyota tech and he told me it could possibly be the MAF.

There was an extra one in the truck so Im going to swap it and see what happens tonight.

I was looking under the hood a little bit today, and I found there is no tps sensor...the screws are in the throttle body and the plug is there but the sensor is missing....we will see what happens.

So, you're running without an O2 sensor or TPS?

I wouldn't have thought that was even possible...

I would definitely say you found the problem. Start with a new TPS and adjust it with this page:

I was running my eclipse with the wrong year computer in it and the car wouldnt run with the MAF plugged in. The DSM experts couldnt figure it out. Nothing amazes me anymore.
