Exclamation HELP!!! DD Stuck in Neutral Drives in Hi4

I am gonna get straight to the problem this past weekend my DD and only vehicle got stuck in neutral I found it would drive only in Hi4 In doing research before this post I found only that hopefully my problems lie in the t-case and not the transmission itself that is my understanding I aint no master mechanic so I can be completely wrong does anyone have any ideas what may be the cause of my problems?? Thank You in advance for any replies

In some of my reading I am lead to believe that the transfer case motor may be the culprit but I can not find the part number if this vehicle even has one

Vehicle is '94 Toyota 4runner 3.slow V6 4WD

If I put the truck in Drive or Reverse it will not move the engine just revs as if it were in neutral it does this in all modes unless I put the truck into Hi4 then it drives

It's almost certainly a tcase problem. Sounds like the output to the rear drive shaft is disconnected or sheared off. So, when you put it in 4hi, the front wheels are providing drive power, but the rear wheels are just along for the ride.

Get it to a mechanic that you trust.

When you shift into first or reverse, does it feel like the gears are engaging? In an attempt to help without belittling anyone, is your clutch pressed all the way to the floor when you're shifting? Transmission issues are not my forte so I would start with the KISS method: keep it simple, stupid. These details could help someone who actually knows what they're talking about narrow down your issue..

It's an automatic transmission, when I put it in drive or reverse in 2WD I can feel it barely shifting into gear if I step on the gas it moves about an inch and then the engine just revs as if it were in neutral in Hi4 it drives very roughly

As another non-mechanic with the same setup, my question is, how did it "get stuck in neutral"? What were you doing when the problem arose?

And, for the master mechanics - what are the things a driver could do that might cause - or avoid - this type of problem?

I was simply at a stop light on Nye when the light turned green my engine just revved as if it were in neutral I shifted through every gear until I found that Hi4 would allow me to drive

Well there's your problem - don't stop at stop lights!

Not sure about the 94 Auto, certain other member's more familiar can advise. Had same/similar problem, transmission was okay but the problem was in the T-Case and according to the Transmission shop they are non-separable. Did not have a clue so I had the shop make the repair, ouch, the cost of labor was absurd, majority of the cost was in removing/installing the transmission. Unfortunately, less that 100 miles vehicle now collecting dust in need of a head gasket.

It's true that the auto transmission and the tcase on the '94 are an integrated unit. As such, there is some communication between the two which I have not studied in any detail, since my vehicle is a manual. It may be that something in the tcase is sending a wrong signal to the transmission, holding it in neutral unless the tcase is in 4hi.

The best would be to pull any transmission diag codes. I've attached the section of the FSM concerning troubleshooting the A340 transmission. Page AT-18 has the procedure for pulling the codes. I'd suggest starting there.
