Well, i went for a test run on the highway today and had no overheating issues so far. I could even cruise @ 100km/h (65mph) up hill. So the new rad and hoses made a difference.
I must say, this is all based on the stock temp. gauge.

After replacing the lower radiator hose, i can focus on other repairs like the pinion seals. And if those are replaced i can begin on the suspension, tires and roofrack. (the fun stuff )

Hm, different story today...

While riding to the carwash i noticed a power drop after shifting to 4th gear and the engine stalled. Pulled over (heavy without power steering) and tried to start the car again. It took a while but eventually it did.

She run's fine until i rev her up above 2500rpm and i start losing power again.
I drove home and revved it up to 3000rpm in neutral and noticed some white smoke from the exhaust.

Also, when in neutral, the idle rpm's go below 500 for a brief moment.

I'm not an experienced mechanic so i don't really know where to start here.
Fun stuff has to wait...

I would do a compression test and a leak down check. Might have a blown head gasket.

Is your oil milky? Does your coolant smell like exhaust? Does the exhaust smell like coolant?

No white sludge, no smell. But i run pure distilled water for now.

I don't know why but i changed the fuel filter and tightend the fuel lines. Did a 20min testrun again and everything seems to be fine.

I don't think a blow head gasket would let me make another successful testrun? Or could i?

Maybe some air in the fuel lines? Bad intake gasket?

I'm planning a compression test anyway.

Ok, here's a tire question.

I can get a deal on five new 16" rim's with nearly new 235/85/R16 (32x9 on 16" rims US-converted) BFG T/A's on it but i'm not sure about the size.

Current size is 235/75/R15 which is way smaller. I'm not afraid about the fysical fit because i have a 2.5" filt planned in the (very) near future but more about the small 2.4L diesel struggeling to get the +80 cm's diameter around.

Or is this just a stupid worry i have in my head

I'm not sure on how much power those have stock. But i had a 3.0 automatic with factory 4.56 gears and it moved 32x12.5R15 just fine up hills at 70MPH

On paper the 2L-T has way less power then the 3vze

3vze vs 2L-T

145 hp vs 91 hp
108 kw vs 68 kw
244 Nm vs 188 Nm

The gear ratio is something I still have to figure out.

Btw, we're talking about the 2L-T and NOT the 2L-TII or 2L-TE.
The 2L-T was built in europe from 1985 all the way up to 2006. (if i'm not mistaken)

Yeah i know nothing about that motor.

You gear ratio code should be on vin sticker in the door jam if it's like over here in the states. If you post a picture of it we can figure it out.

Gearbox R150F:

Quote:
R150F
A 4WD transmission found in many Toyota trucks. Land Cruiser II, Land Cruiser Prado and Hilux Surf (1989-1993) 2L-T series and 1KZ series Turbo Diesel, V6 3VZE and 5VZ-FE ] (also Japan, UK and Europe 1KZ/TE 4Runners, 93-95)
Ratios:

First Gear: 3.830:1
Second Gear: 2.062:1
Third Gear: 1.436:1
Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
Fifth Gear: 0.838:1

Looks like the 3vze and 2lt share the same gearbox...

edit: I think it's 4.56 diff ratio but i need to confirm that.

Yes that's the same transmission in the 3VZE. R150F 23 spline.

I was talking about 3rd member ratio's.

That's beyond my knowledge. Is there a link to a website where i can read all about it? I googled a bit but 'computer says no...'

Ordered some silicon parts to replace the lower water hose.

The plan is to cut away the bad part from the hose (upper corner) and replace that with a silicon-based corner. The problem was that the diameter is not the same on the two sides. Is this the same with the 3vze?
When this is done i can finally hit the road again and start focusing (or throwing money) on other stuff.

While waiting for delivery i did some more cleaning:

How bad is this?

After cleaning:

Oh, i'm also going to need to study again. I registered myself for evening lessons for car-mechanics. It's a 3 year study plan.

edit: am i missing a screw here?

Hello Arild! Quite nice build you have, wish I have place to work on my car too.
One thing, did you fix your stalling engine issue? I had similar problem when I got mine 4R. Drive fine at first then does not rev up, power went down, stalled, almost like yours. Mine is fixed (hopefully) now so I maybe can point you in some direction

Thank's. Nice to see another diesel on this forum!

The problem is fixed, sort of... It just went away after i replaced the fuel filter. But i'm not 100% sure that the filter was the problem. So i'm not satisfied because i don't now what caused it in the first place.

A few new parts arrived yesterday and got them installed already. Made another 30min test-ride yesterday but still not at highway-speeds. (have to replace pinion-seals and diff-oil first because i'm afraid to mess up the gears)

Anyway, how did you solve your problem? And are you running stock tires/rims?

Glad to hear its fixed, but be on guard. I had filter replaced as well and it was only temporary fix. 500km after it was back. Real problem was clogged filter inside fuel tank. Its been over half year since cleaned and no problem so far.

I am running stock rims with non factory tire size, same as yours -> 235/75 R15. Original 215/75 R15 looked weird. Bought new tires two weeks back.

Looking on pics of your throttle body, very nice. Is there any difference noticable? Guess you also cleaned up rest of intake. Maybe I will clean mine. I seem to have lots of oil from PCV.
