Would you swap or rebuild a 22re?

Hey all,

So I'll probably have to rebuild this 22re (later rather than sooner). The 4runner it came off is still all stock. She needs a lot of work but looks fairly OK for the miles and years

Is there any value in keeping the stock engine in there? Come to think about it, I haven't even checked if it is the stock engine... but I have reason to believe it is.

What I'm thinking is, if this thing made it 250k miles it'd be a shame to take it out of the vehicle it came in, like separating a baby from its mother. No? I mean, if it ever does get to half a million, that wouldn't be so cool if it wasn't the original engine, right?

The problems it has now is a LOT of oil leaking and a slight noise (kinda like glass marbles bouncing) at certain revs. I'll be taking the cover off to inspect the chain tensioner guides soon. Doesn't look like the oil is coming from the sump (or at least not only from the sump), it looks like it might be coming from the timing cover and then just covering everything behind it.
