New 1st gen project (1989 4Runner)

I picked up a 1989 4Runner V6 from Copart yesterday, with the intention of using it for a parts truck for my wife's rusty '87. It's been totaled out by the insurance company for flood damage (last fall, NC) but the sheet metal is MUCH better than hers.

However, after looking it over I think I'm going to try to fix it, using her '87 as the donor truck, possibly.

I'm starting this thread to catalog the progress, so here's a photo from when I picked it up yesterday to start:

I never got so lucky when i was looking at cars through copart, then when i did the price went way above what it was worth to me.

Nice find, any more pics of the interior?

I've had a chance to put a few hours into the submarine this weekend.

First thing I did was charge the battery so that I could roll down the rear window to remove the top. - I'm pleasantly surprised that the rear window and power door windows all function, as does the clock, and the radio powers up. (Had some dash lights too)

Pulled the top so that the interior could start to air out - it's moldy/mildewy but overall pretty decent:

So far so good; I thought to myself: "I'll drain the oil, pull the plugs and turn the engine over by hand, put fresh oil in it, and see if she'll start.."

Well, the crankcase was way overfilled. With water.

The intake is also full of water - TB and AFM were holding water and are pretty corroded at this point. Either this thing went way under when parked (and the interior doesn't really reflect that - it doesn't look like any water got high enough to get to the rear deck behind seats), or someone was trying to cross something too deep and ingested lots of water (like 10 quarts!) into the running engine - I guess either could have easily been the case with the flooding we had here in NC last fall.

In any event, I'm assuming the axles, transmission, and transfer case are in similar shape - although I haven't checked them yet. That said, I have an '88 roller with both axles, so I'll be fine there.

I also have a rolled a '95 Taco with a 3.4 and a 5speed, so I'm thinking about binning the 3.0 and swapping the 3.4, although I haven't researched it enough to know what I'm up against there. I'm definitely a fan of the 3.4 though.

Any advice/wisdom for me so far?

My son has a 1993 3.0 with auto trans with about 140K miles for sale. It's listed in the classifieds. He did a 1UZFE swap. Ran nicely before he took it out, just not enough testosterone for a kid.

so I drained the 5spd and the transfer case today; water in both - not so much as the engine, and very little in the tcase, actually.

from what I've been reading, I can swap the oil pan/pickup/dipstick from the 3.0 over to the 3.4, but I'll have to modify the exhaust to bolt the engine in. What I haven't resolved is whether or not I can use the taco 5Spd with the 4Runner tcase? I'm concerned about the viability of the original transmission because of the water ingestion...

Also, since my intention is to keep both the cruise control and the A/C, my wiring modifications will need to take those into account.

From what I've read the 3.0 to 3.4 swap is pretty straightforward. I think a body lift or a scoop to fit it in is needed.

Any reason you want to use the 4runner transfer? I'm guessing both boxes are R series so why not just swap the lot?

Looks like a tidy truck, that interior looks to be in good condition.

The 4Runner transfer case is passenger side drop; the taco is driver's side.

Wow. That's a nice looking rig from afar. Always sad to see these beauties in a scrap yard.

Good idea. I assume you'll use the wiring and interior from your wife's truck, or at least determine what was effected by the flood damage as they can haunt you down the road.

Oh I'm glad this thread popped back up! I had to reorganize my schedule this year, so the 4Runner got pushed to 2021. But I'm looking forward to it!
