HVAC Controls Removal

1987, 22re, 5spd, no rear heat.
My son bent the living crap out of my heater control slider levers (control cable froze). I now have no heat. Fan works, flushed core, hoses to/from core are very hot. I suspect the air-mix door is not directing air over the heater core, but not sure. I thought if you got fan air in the cab it HAD to cross the core, anyway I'll have to sort that out but insights welcome

The Real Question: How much of the dash has to come out to swap the entire heater control slider assembly? Just trying to decide home much time and beer to allow for.
Thanks, S.

I'm in a similar situation only I'm the son. My dad has a old 91 4runner that he started work on because the heater control broke. He had to take the whole dashboard off to work on it and never got around to putting it back together and he has since told me that if I can get it out of his garage it's mine.

Time wise I'd say your looking at about an hour to take it apart and can't say about putting it back together. I'm starting the process of putting it back together without having been the one to take it apart. I did find this video that can get you started it's about swapping out the dashboard gauges but it looks like it's almost the same work to get to the dashboard dismantled.

We got this, you’re spot on. 45 minutes in and it’s almost out, finish up in the morning. My 87 gen one is likely different but if there is anything I can do to help get yours back together just hit me up. I’ve got a parts truck with no dash that has been useful in identifying hidden bolts. Thanks for the reply.

My Rough Little Girl

hey Guys - I too am having an issue with my heater in my 91- though I think I caused it myself. Recently had a stereo put in and then the heat slider seemed stuck - it was stiff before so I pushed it a little harder --> BANG!! I took the dash out so that I could replace the broken cable but now I don't seem to have full range of either heat or cold - it is somewhere in the middle no matter where I move the slider. I'm trying to figure out what else I broke as Winter is coming. I have a video of the levers under the heater box but I'm not sure if they are moving correctly and I don't know how to post it here.
