Hey thanks. I'm pretty fond of it. And I agree on the 2nd gen's overall body look. Too bad their front suspension sorta blows for upgrades and ride quality, and the engine is a turd in my opinion. But man do they grow on you like moss. My wife is jealous of the strange love affair I have with mine. When we got married, I never put her name on the title... Maybe she's a bit spiteful ;)

Couple updates. Flange leak should be fixed. For those wondering here are some part numbers

The nut is INCORRECT however. Gonna check on that and I'll update. Totally different and too small to thread on

I'm of the mindset: ain't broke don't fix it so I only did the little inner seal. Pushed in by hand super easy. Old seal

Torqued flange nut to 90 lb/ft and re-staked it, also added blue lock tite. I'm confident.

And to contradict myself, I'm also a "good enough is NOT good enough" guy so I added a dust boot to the compressor quick connect.

That shouldn't be able to be improved upon until I add an air tank and air horn... One days ;)

Just noticed your thread. Excellent rig Nick. Apologies on the flange nut.

Not a problem at all. A good parts guy is a lost art so I'm super happy to have you help me. I was planning on reusing the old nut anyhow so it all worked out. I just want one as a spare for the trail box. We'll work it out.

Clean install on the compressor
Curious though if that is an MV-50? If so you will be surprised how much heat they generate. Hopefully it cools enough with it's limited duty cycle.
I have 2 of them...

Thanks. Yeah I'm pretty sure it's an MV-50. Oh yeah I do realize the heat issue. I tried planning for it with the computer fan/vent addition to the install. This is the only pic I took of the fan behind the vent inside the console.

I also only have 32" tires and air up time is like 2 minutes per tire at the most. I also learned to turn off the compressor when switching between tires. It gets hot FAST when it runs and has no where for the compressed air to go. I wonder if those stupid expensive ARBs generate similar heat for the $300+... still not worth it to me.

Quick cosmetic update. Finally gave the rear some attention

Before: faded 24 year old plastic of the bumper had turned grey. Can't see it here but the little OEM spoiler's finish was chipped and terrible too

So I painted some Bedliner on the plastic, since it is a step and a little grip there is nice. Standard satin black for spoiler and I did the plastic around the license lights and license plate black too since the factory grey look wasn't doing it for me. Now it looks NICE back there. Even for a stock, dinged up bumper

As a bonus I hit the tail and reverse light lenses with some paint polish stuff my buddy gave me. Brought the lights back to life. Gotta love the little things.

Tackling something that's been on my want list for some time: Project Full Length Roof Rack

Ordered an additional duplicate rack kit and cut it up a bit to create another extension.

Here is the teaser pic of the full length resting roughly in place

Thanks to @Dropzone for the idea of adding stock roof rail pieces for extensions to mount it all. Only got to one rivnut tonight before I shut down my garage...No going back now as there's a fresh 19/64 hole in the roof... Only 5 more holes to complete the rail mounting. Terrifying.

I like that rack, what brand or did you build it? if so nice job

drilling that first hole can be sort of nerve wracking...just be sure you seal them like crazy. i had one hole i thought i had put a ton of silicone sealer in and of course it was the one that leaked.

I love your build and the fact that you have 15 years with your rig!!

2nd Gen with 5vz and 5 speed is the perfect 4Runner for me!

Cheers

For the rack, it's one of the few things that's bought, not built. It's a Uventure, by Reese I believe. Amazon has them for like $100. Currently, this will be 3 total rack kits cut up and combined into one. Keep in mind I acquired the 1.0 version which was 2 rack kits combined for zero dollars from a buddy.

I was incredibly nervous. But after the first, there's no going back. I'm using a really good quality RV roof sealant, around the rivnuts upon insertion (giggity) and I'll add a dollop for the rail install as well to cover the threads.

Thanks! It's been a labor of love. I have an admittedly unhealthy attachment to it at this point. But that means everything I do matters that much more.

Full Length Roof Rack is DONE!

Pros: doubled the storage, looks waaaay better, left and right side overhead lights are now actually over my head instead of behind it.

Cons: had to put 6 new holes/rivnuts in the roof, and won't really be doing a leak test until winter...

Silver lining/daily bonus: when I took off stock rails to paint them, I found a little rust forming under an end cap. Not bad for 24 years overall but glad I found it.

Love the build! The compressor is such a cool idea, I'm gonna have to steal that when the rear heater core eventually starts leaking lol

Thanks! We have to optimize space in these that's for sure.

Unrelated:
Had my Brake Booster fail. Symptoms include AFR/Boost gauge pegs to max lean when brake pedal is pushed (indicating vacuum leak), severe "whoosh" sound from under my feet when brake pedal is applied (further indicating vacuum leak), and what was the other thing? Oh yeah right right: it takes approximately 4.8 miles to stop the damn truck and requires the right quadricep power of an NFL all-star linebacker.

Turns out OEM booster aren't available for a 24 year old truck. Had to go aftermarket. Amazon to the rescue.

Installed it tonight in about an hour and half and drove around the block. I almost knocked my teeth out on the steering wheel during the first stop, holy moly is it better. The hair medal band Cinderella got it right when they said "you don't know what you got til it's gone."

Tip for others is that it didn't come with new gaskets for firewall/master cylinder. Those are still available from Toyota. I didn't have time to wait so I just used some RTV pretty thick. It's really just for dust and dirt, but it's important to stay diligent.
