Its Official!!!

As many of you know i have been slowly working on my 1985 4runner. i swapped out the rusty body with an 88, swapped the wiring harness's, sanded &painted the frame and rebuilt the 22re. I bought my runner off of my aunt who had owned it since around 89. it sat uncovered for about 8 years before i went up the hill and changed the oil and battery. Damn thing fired right up so i took the rusty pos down to see if it would pass smog. sure enough it was a go. My step uncle bought her a 97 runner and the 85 got parked.

A few months ago my aunt passed away in a swimming accident in a local river so her 97 has been sitting around for about 3 months. It has 140 k on the 3.4 and my step uncle did the timing belt and related work not long ago. its in good shape except the fact that her dog chewed up some of the inside. she loved the 85 more than the 97 so she was always happy to see me fixing it up in the uncles 3 bay shop. soooo i picked up the 97 for 3k. Ive had 10 people say im dumb for tearing up a 97 to pimp out an 85. Every one here knows they are wrong.

My plan is to take the 3.4 and tranny and put it into the 85. Im also going to take the seats and obviously the computer. Im considering the rear end (not sure on its gear ratio yet, its a 5 speed and the 85 has 410). I still have a lot of reading to do but work is going to start on Jan 4th. Im curious what you guys would do if you were in my situation. What all would you take from donor? I figure if i take what i want and part out the rest ill be getting a real good deal on the parts i need. suggestions appreciated.

Im going to put my 22re rebuild on cl. it has a about 5 k on it. it was bored and the head was redone. new pistons and bearings. oil pump waterpump etc. it is still usen some oil but i have noticed a small leak above the starter somewhere. i plan on finding the issue and resolving it before i put it up. as for the 97 body and frame, its all completley straight.(if any ones interested). Merry xmas to me! ill start a build thread after the new year!

I think three grand is a lot to spend on a donor truck, but they're your trucks so have at it!

My biggest gripe with the 3.4 swap is the driveshaft location. What's your plan for dealing with that?

Yeah, the t-case that goes with the 3.4 trans has its output on the left while the axle on the 85 is for a right drop. How are you planning on dealing with that ?

I think you can get a adapter to put a gear case on the v6 trans.
I would love to the same thing but don't have any 5 speeds for 3.4.

Marlin has the adapter you are looking for. Although you would need to get a 23spline input shaft for it as the 85 should have a 21 spine factory shaft.

i do plan on getting the adapter and am aware im going to have to tweak my tcase. from what i understand its either that or use my w56 and a 3.0 bellhousing. not sure it really matters either way. im under the impression the w56 would hold up fine but think it would be nice to have the smoother shifting 97 5 speed. i have posted a few pics on my body swap but will throw up a few for the guys that dont know me. the picks on the motor swap will start comming after the new year. Before

didnt realize the newer body had a different wiring harness so it turned into a little more of a job than i expected. but it did give me an excuse to tear apart the red dash and use the special black dash paint. i hated the red interior.

Those adapters are bucks. I hear tell the transmissions in T100 5VZEs have a passenger drop transfer case, which makes sense since they share the 7.5 IFS diff, but I don't know what else might be involved in using one. It'd definitely be worth the cost of a $600 adapter to look into it though.

Nice! Glad you got it running!

Watch the classifieds for that adapter, I picked one up on pirate for $150 a little while ago that was just missing the coupler which I was able to get right from advance adapters. TG and Advance adapters (and I think inchworm) all make the adapter too because marlin never has it in stock. I believe AA makes a 23 spline to 21 spline version so you dont have to tear into the t case.

Im not up on my 3.4 swap stuff, but do people use a 3.0 bell housing on a w56? Im pretty sure that wont line up. Dont think use a R series bell housing will fit on a W series tranny.

i ended up getting a 3.0 tranny and bolting it to the 3.4. the 3.0 cross member bolted right up and i tacked my motor mounts from there. the 3.0 rad worked out. i pretty much have an 85 frame, 88 body, 93 tranny and radiator, and a 97 motor. i also took the rear axle out of the 93 v6. i will need 1.5 in wheel spacers on the front axle. my power steering line had to be custom made as did my rear drive line. i will customize the front driveline myself. today i got the rad and drive line all hooked up. i was able to pull it out of the shop today under its own power. now i need to figure out what to do with all the ca smog bs. it seems my canister is a newer model than my intake so i need to figure out how to make that shit work, or learn to bypass it. rig will never be sold so smog dont mean much to me. getting close boys! pics comming soon. shit mabey even video if i can figure that out...\

forgot to mention., ill have my custom cross over pipe and exhaust done by tue. valentines day is ****en my schedule lol.
