'88 V-6 new engine options?

I've got an 88 4runner with the 3VZE engine. Engine is having troubles... it MIGHT be a blown head gasket but there's a good chance it's more. The motor has 310,000 on it so I'm thinking the best option is to go for a new motor. Are there any easy conversions or should I go for another 3VZE. Didn't some years have a recall on the 3VZE? I'm curious as to what my options are. If you have any ideas or suggestions let me know. I just spent a lot of time and money fixing this car up so I'd love to get it up and running again. Thanks for the help

Several years of the 3.0 did have a recall for HG problems, but it's over.

Swapping in a newer 3.4 would be great.
