Independent Suspension

I have a 1990 4Runner with a 6 cylinder all stock. I am wanting to do some more 4x4ing and independent suspension just isnt cutting it. SO i was just curious if anyone has swapped Idependent for a straight axle? If so was it expensive or complicated? Or would i just be better off getting an 1984 4Runner with a stock straight axle?

Thanks in advance

Questions like this are better answered over at places like TTORA and Yotatech.

But to wet your whistle, go to http://www.trail-gear.com/ and look at their stuff. They sell an excellent kit to do an SAS (solid axle swap) on your truck. I've helped install one of their kits on a buddy's truck and it is really nice stuff.

Remember the term SAS as that's what you'll search for at the other forums.

http://www.yotatech.com/forumdisplay.php?f=116
http://www.ttora.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=18

and TTORA even has a forum for SAS...

http://www.ttora.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=7

And is you want to see the really hardcore, go visit pirate 4x4. Just don't post over there until you learn the ropes. They eat people that don't search first for breakfast, and you have to pay to search.

That's BS.

Why not improve this site by answering questions instead of sending people elsewhere.

Just because YOU may not know anything about it doesn't mean others don't.

Dude... Where the hell did that come from?

I did answer the question and pointed him to where he could get tons more useful info. There just aren't that many people here that do serious modifications to their trucks like that. Notice I didn't say there aren't any, but that I said there aren't many.

I'll give it to you though, you really helped him out with your post.

Now if he wants to know how to be an ass he can follow in your shoes.

I am on the thumpertalk 4 stroke motorcycle forum and we are always pointing people in different directions or to other websites because they might have seen something helpful to them so they turned it around to help the other guys who are having the same problem. On thumpertalk we have a mutual understanding that we answer the questions and give are best shot at helping the guy fix it, not yelling at people over stupid responses.

I'm on TT too, same nic.

I ride an 04 YZ450, the wife rides a TTR125 and the boy a TTR90. As you can see we bleed blue around here.

I spend most of my time there these days in the TTR forum.

I'm guessing the 400 in your name refers to your bike right?

What ya got?

Yes you can do this. There are several companies that offer anywhere from pieces a la carte to complete kits. Trail Gear has a pretty complete front kit for $1100.00 shipped. These kits have all dropped in price quite a bit in the last couple of years due to competition. This also means the kits are tried and true, There are tons of guys running these parts with safety and success.

That said, I'm cutting up my '86 June 1st and installing the full Trail Gear kit. Wish me luck. Here's a pic of the TG front kit. VERY complete!

My front axle, since the pic I've cut off the stock shock mounts and welded the TG knuckle gussets, painted it, and installed the knuckles.
