Please help me. Brand new rebuild will not run. DTC 32. Codes keep reappearing.

Hello everyone, I am in dire need of some help. The beautiful 3vze has broken me. I have heard rumors of these engines bringing fearless men to their knees after countless repair attempts. Just never thought it would do the same to me.

Anyway, like the title states, I have just rebuilt this engine and had a skip in my step day dreaming about wheelin through the mountain side again, Unfortunately I was very wrong. With the engine not running I perform the standard tests to help diagnose the issue. I checked for fuel pump operation by jumping Fp and B+ and it worked great. I checked fuel pressure at the rain and got 50psi, the plugs were also saturated in fuel, so i know the injectors are firing.
Next I checked for spark while cranking and the ingition system had plenty of spark. After another start attempt I checked for spark again and had nothing.,,,, In figured the ecu went into some sort of fail safge mode. So i jumped Te1 and e1 to read the DCTs in the cluster.
I received DTC's 22, 24, 32 41. All of these sensors(IAT,VAFM,ECT,TPS) use the same circuits. These circuits are E2 and VC. I perform all the tests that the workshop manual states to, but all of the sensors check out OK.
Frustrated now, I go to the junkyard to just replace these components. I take a TPS, VAFM, DISTRIBUTOR, IGNITION COIL, IGNITOR off of a 4runner and purchase a new cap/rotor for the distributor. Once i install them I disconecct battery negative and remove fuses 20amp ignition/ecu(drivers kick panel) and the 15amp efi fuse in the fuse box located in engine bay.
All of these codes cleaer except for the DTC 22. I go purchase one from autozone and install. I pull fuses again and clear dtcs.As soon as I turn igntion on I am getting one dtc now.
The dtc i retrieved was DTC 32, which I had previously fixed I thought. The manual states,"DTC 32-VOLUME AIR FLOW METER SIGNAL. OPEN OR SHORT DETECTED CONTINUOUSLY FOR .5 SECS OR MORE IN VOLUME AIR FLOW METER CIRCUIT. OPEN E2, SHORT VS-VC.
I then proceeded to check the VC circuit. I checked the voltage from E2 at the ECU to VC at the VAFM. Voltage was 4.98volts which is a good reading. I then checked the ground side, measuring from E2 at the VAFM to the positive battery terminal resulting in 12 volts, indicating a good ground.

I am losing my mind trying to fix this problem. I just spent all this time and money rebuilding this engine just to have the computer erase and then set codes that it stated were previously fixed. If anyone can help me out you have no idea how much I will appreicate it. I need to get this car back on the road before it gets towed..,

I'm wondering if you have the distributor in correctly. Crankshaft can be on top dead center twice during a full engine cycle. So gotta be sure it's in right orientation.

Problem with OBD 1 cars is the electronics are terribly unreliable. Even getting codes doesn't solidify any real problem. It sounds like you've recently had the engine re-installed so be sure all the grounds are in place. Especially the ones under that shit hole intake on the passenger side rear valve cover area. There's a dual set that contributes to a main engine harness ground, without which odd things will occur.

Cant be of much other help. Other than how happy I am to have ditched that terrible engine and have the 3.4 sitting pretty under my 2nd gen's hood. That's always an option.

I verified that the distributor is at #1 tdc on the compression stroke. Pulled the plug and verified that compression was coming out the hole when turning the crank. distributor slid right in to the #1 spot. Which ground wires are you referring to? I know there is the one that has a connector bolted down to intake plenum, then the ones off of the fender apron to driverside of the block.

There is a ground set that comes off the main engine harness and bolts down to passenger cylinder head just behind valve cover. Used a 10mm headed bolt. This grounds the engine harness and if I'm not mistaken part of the ECM circuits also. There is a similar ground set on the 3.4 which if left off will cause a no start as well. I've seen the 3.0 ground left loose during a valve cover job and it will cause random dying and funky stuff. You'll probably have to take the plenum off to access. It's pretty buried. Just follow main harness where it comes thru the firewall and follow all off shoots. It's back there I promise

I found a video and screen shot it to show the ground. It's circled and has the arrow pointing to it. Let me know if it shows up for you.
