Unhappy Power antenna to whip antenna

The power antenna was broken when I bought my '88 4runner and I want to replace it with a whip antenna because they can handle trails without breaking. Does anyone know if I can just go to a pick a part and buy one from a random car and expect it to fit the hole in my fender?

The antenna plug into the back of the radio should be a generic connection/plug… at least I haven’t come across anything different in the limited times I have installed a car stereo.

You should be able to find an antenna with a pigtail and just install the new one and abandon the existing in place. Another idea would be to cut and crimp (with the right tools) the existing antenna wire and add the appropriate whip.

The method will probably depend on what you can find for replacement antennas. Most new cars don’t even have a whip… perhaps you can something similar and have a very clean install.
