Draining the gas tank.
So, apparently there's a baffle in the gas tank, I can't get my siphon down there, and I've got most of a tank of gas to get out before I can drop it. What are my options?
I've considered putting a bucket under the drain plug, but I've got way more than 5 gallons in there. Anybody know exactly where that baffle is? If it's in the fill tube, I suppose I could try to pull the fill tube while the tank is in place - anything else I should consider?

I think I'll try and go through the fuel pump access door.

The 3rd gen tank has one baffle that is more like a slow filling reservoir in the center that the pump draws from. This reservoir holds gas at the pump so when driving at the stupid angles we do, the engine still gets gas.
I would think that you could drop a siphon tube into the tank and it would drain most of the gas.

If it's like the 2nd Gen, there is a short baffle all around the feed/pump, like a square fence with the corners cut out. Then there is a wall at each end of the tank with openings around the sides--this is likely where you're hitting, as the fill tube is in the far corner. When I had to drain mine, I just had a couple gas cans at the ready, with one ready to slide under once the first was close to full. You can regulate the flow with the gas cap--loosen it up for faster, screw it down to slow the flow for the can swap. Use a wide-mouth funnel to assist.

Pulled the fuel pump, that looks to be the easiest way in. Now that I'm there, though, I like your idea too, Bob. I hadn't thought of the vacuum inhibiting the flow when you fasten the cap, that's great.

With that little petrol in the tank, you should be able to drop it down and out.

If it were me, I would find a section of hose and run it from your fuel line on the 86 then to the gas tank in your 85. Then run a hot wire to your fuel pump and let your fuel pump do the work for you. No siphoning required and you've got a tank of gas for your 85.

Drill a hole in the bottom of the gas tank - drain completely - let dry - seal hole with JB Weld - TADA!

SV_Dude FTW!!! Nice idea.
You can probably activate the pump just by turning the ignition to "run" though- no need to wire it up!

I don't think the fuel pump will run unless the motor is cranking but you can use a jumper or just run 12v to the pump connector. You can siphon the tank but it has a baffle around the pump like BucknutBob mentioned. If you use a small enough hose you will get 95% of the gas out. I usually jam the line through a 3/8" drive socket to make sure it hits the bottom of the tank.

You're 100% correct. Unless the ECU gets the signal from the AFM that the air vane is open and air is entering the engine, the pump will not turn on. This is why I suggested to run a hot wire to the pump and let the pump do the work for you.
