94 Sr5 4x4 2nd gen questions about traction, does it need a locker?

I'll be honest, I've never actually gotten stuck in my runner yet and we've been to some interesting places, deep ass sand, sloppy mud trails, and steep icy slick red dirt hills. However one day I tried to pull a friend's nissan 2wd crossover out of a muddy spot. He had driven it down during dry weather but after a week of rain it was slick as could be. What we noticed is that even in 4 low when trying to pull him the right rear tire was spinning like the dickens and the left was sitting there looking bored as could be. The front two were spinning as well. Does this mean that the truck doesn't have any kind of locking rear differential? Or is it broken haha? After a few sorry attempts we gave up, and then had a bit of a time getting the runner back up the hill. Thankfully we were able to find some traction on the side of the driveway and once I got momentum, gave it hell and didn't stop till I was at the top. I've noticed in 2wd it kinda does this too when pulling out onto wet roads. Once one wheel starts spinning it just kinda sits there sadly hoping for traction, which only comes once it slows down and gets a grab on the pavement. I'm wondering if it's just a standard differential with no sort of locker.

What options do I have if I want the power to go to the other wheel when one is spinning and losing traction. It's not a big deal, like I said we've always carried on, but a little more traction would be great!
