Alignment specs
Does anyone have factory front-end alignment specs for '84 or '85 pickup or 4Runner? Looking for toe-in and caster, camber is really not adjustable.
(Yes, I searched. Did not find.)

Not "factory" but this is trail gears instructions for setting the alignment.
With the truck on the ground, set the tow-in of the front tires at 1/8". This is done by turning the Tie Rod with the jam nuts loose. Measure the widest part of the tire at the front and rear of the tire. Adjust the Tie Rod until the front is 1/8" narrower than the rear.

Thanks, actually that's useful, but what I am really looking for is caster. The general wisdom on the interwebs is most vehicles should be 3deg-5deg positive caster. Mine is reading 7.1 or so, and I think this is what's causing my death wobble. Or at least part of it.
Camber is fixed on solid axle trucks by the trunion bearing design, but caster can be adjusted with angle shims under the springs, or by cutting the spring pads off the housing and welding them back at whatever angle you want.
Im just trying to find the original factory specs.

Its far from stock. Its an IFS truck with a SAS. But I am trying to get the Toyota front axle properly aligned to tune out the death wobble. I can eliminate DW by going nuts with toe-out, but then it wears the tires excessively. The stock TG springs seem to give it way too much caster. So Im going to try some steel angle shims to get it back close to stock.
With it measuring ~7deg, I bought some 4deg shims... we'll see how that does.

No problem! Other remedies would be a longer front hanger or a shorter shackle in the back, or just springs with less lift in them.
Hows your front drive shaft angles look?

I want to see if the shims will be an easy fix. The other solutions are all invasive surgery, which I dont mind doing, but Im gonna tackle the easy one first. Lowering the truck is probably not an option without more serious fender cutting, which I dont want to do.

Well....it works. A long slip and I dont drive the front end locked at any real speed. The shims will actually help the driveline angle issue...Im just fearful that the tie-rod will interfere with the spring. Once I get the shims in there, I can see what it all looks like.

My friend John Griffin owns griffin specialty and has all the plasma table and CNC stuff, and he knows how to use it. I learned a lot! He TIGed the exhaust plumbing in stainless, and did a lot of the other stuff that was beyond my skill level. But he has the designs for the 5VZ engine mounts for example, if someone else wants some. And the xfer case mount can easily be adapted to whatever engine/trans is used by simply adjusting the location of the mounting holes. He's a Yota nut also, I think he has 3 first-gen 4Runners and one IFS truck.

In case anyone cares, I installed 4deg shims under the trail-gear springs. This brings me back to ~3 deg positive caster, which is still high, but all I can muster without new steering arms. It also substantially improved the front driveline angle between the diff and the driveshaft. The histeer tie-rod is very close to the spring, but does not touch it...yet, I havent tried it at max articulation. I set the toe-in to the specs linked above, and the death wobble is gone. And this is with no steering stabilizer at all.
I have a new stabilizer inbound, and will install that and I think its done for now....
Its good to have my old friend back in working order.
