A-pillar Cancer

I came up with surprisingly little when I searched this topic. I'm mostly interested in what causes this rust. Why does it seem more common on the passenger side? What's the right fix to stop further degradation?

I removed as much as I could yesterday which opened up small holes (5-8mm) and then slathered on POR15, made a fiberglass patch and then slathered on some more. But, I really want to address the cause.

All than said, this rig did sit for 10 years under a fir tree within site of the ocean so, it's a miracle there's not a LOT more rust than there is.

The seam sealer on the drip rail is cracking letting water in between that and the body. The drip rail is just spot welded on most of the way to the roof.
