what's it worth?!? (1986 first gen)

Hey guys,

I don't know the 1st gen market well or even at all for that matter...

hoping you guys can chime in and let me know what your thoughts are.

details:
1986
base model
original drivetrain
manual 4x4
233k miles
2nd owner, CLEAN title

a couple cosmetic issues but no rear "rust" under the body - just surface stuff

- doesn't shift into 4th (grinds when you get there)
- hasn't been driven since it was stolen 6-7 years ago, just sat in this guys backyard covered with a tarp
- back hatch door doesn't shut properly and glass is down in the hatch so will need to tear into it and fix that but glass is intact.
- leaking transfer case seals.

what do you think it's worth? any insight to these models or things to look for? is this rare or a dime a dozen?

-thanks my dudes!!

Uh.... Did he get it back after it was stolen? I would double check the VIN to make sure it's actually safe to buy this thing dude.

yeah he got it back and was slowly adding back the things they took..

but because the DMV had back registration fees, he got too busy to take care of it.. (he also has like 5 other old Toyota trucks)

his name is on the pink slip, and he has a ton of records. so not worried about it being legit or not.

just wanted to see what people thought it was worth.

aside from it being stolen a while back, what do you think it's worth?

Could be anywhere from $2500 to 7000? depending on how it cleans up how it runs and moves down the road.

i'd say it would be at the lower end up the price spectrum, less than $2K
in addition to all the potential rust hidden by the moss
it has the wrong grill, that grill is off an 84-86 so unless he replaced it & right front bumper mount is also incorrect since it doesn't line up for the two lower bolt mounts i would
as previously recommended double check the VIN in the normal places:
left front frame, engine fire wall and the door jam

edit- correct grill, for some reason on the original post i thought it was an 1988, sorry..

doesn't California because some stupid BS like paying for the registration even when a car was not registered?

watch out for those CA DMV back fees...lots of times, its big $$$ like $500-800 or maybe more if owner didn't put it on NON-OP....it keeps piling on fees and penalty fees on top....ca dmv is crazy with back fees... I Tried to buy motorcycle from seller and it had back fees of $500 or so.. which I told seller deduct the back fees from agreed fees...he was pissed but sold it anyway, needed his money.

100% This. If I remember right you can check the CA DMV site with the VIN to find out the amount owed. If it's built up more that $500ish bucks, with the condition of the truck, it's probably only worth buying as a parts donor at this point.

My other two cents; see if you can find local listings for comparable trucks. IMH that's the best way to determine "worth" for a car. From there factor in any known issues and obvious high dollar fixes it needs when you are comparing between the two.

thanks for the feedback/info - he is working to get the fees dismissed as we speak. wondering if you can link me to that area on the DMV site where I can check the VIN - I can't seem to find it.

not sure I noticed vin stickers anywhere like I normally would. they were stickers correct? frame looked straight so don't think it was in an accident. I will ask about the grill - he is the 2nd Owner so if he plays dumb or doesn't know anything about it, may be something to mention.

right front bumper mount ------ can you elaborate on this? I don't see it

the plot thickens...
super clean carafax - but from the look of the mileage - it hasn't been driven since 2010 as the mileage seemed to be exactly the same, plus a couple miles but not much. looks like change of title in year 2000, so current owner wasn't lying when he said he is the 2nd owner.

the other positive I see here is that it's been within 30 miles of me my whole life (born in 87')

There should be a VIN stamped into the frame-pretty sure in the left front- maybe right front
VIN plates should also be riveted to the firewall and the d/s door jamb in addition to the one riveted on the lower left of the windshield.

As far as the bumper mount it looks weird to me that the lower bolt hole isn’t used and the lower bolt head barely covers the lower lip of the mount
I think the mounts are from an 84-85

What sorta price is the owner coming back with? Enough to make it worth making up a ton of registration fees?

Good luck getting CA to waive fees on anything! I just moved out of CA in November and there is just about no way in heck I will ever go back. I despise the government of that state with the hatred of seven diseased camels.

I think the link below is it, just spoof the purchase data. Also depending on seller, you could always acquire it as a "Gift" - check the numbers on that too? LMK if it works!

thanks for the link - unless the current owner settles this with the form he sent in (4-6 week turnaround time) looks like we could have $781 worth of back fees..

I was under the impression that if you gift a vehicle, they use the median blue book value which could end up being more than the actual purchase price.

I like to hook up my buyer and put a nominal purchase price to help them save on taxes during registration (ie ~$300 purchase price).

but that's just me

Bumper may be off a 2WD, it has no end-caps and the width is off. Might explain the mount.
