Its all about the parts you break, and the friends you make.

Some folks taking a walk posted a picture of an abandoned vehicle. My wife and friends read the post and a couple hours later we drove it home. Missing a few things like the winch and now have a few new dents but they didn't break it. They used a half tank of gas did some wheeling and left it in the flood plain behind the lake.

Do a thorough check for drugs around the cabin and under the seats that they may have left. I am truly glad you got it recovered. These stories usually end with the vehicle being torched or stripped.

I'm glad this is such a short thread. IMO, stealing a classic 4Runner is much worse than stealing a newer one. Yours is in extremely good condition. Very happy you got it back. Now for preventive measures...

Great news, congrats. I've been there myself...my '88 was stolen from my driveway 10 years ago. Got it back a week later, about the same condition as yours. $650 to recon it, and added a VERY well hidden kill switch. I sold my boat to pay for the recon, and to make room for the Runner in the garage. That's where I keep her now.

A few weeks back I went through the site researching the alarms folks are using. The kill switch was the best option and I just got sidetracked on home repairs. I was also looking at tracking devices, the good news I have a 2nd chance.

Glad you got it back.
Kill switch for ignition (spark)
Kill switch for starter (crank)
Kill switch for fuel pump
Simpler, less likely to break, and once you get in the habit of using them all, more effortless and problem-free than fancy electronics.

Then this (I only use one but I saw this at boat yard in Dana Point-

A picture paints a thousand words.
Toyota components are bullet-proof. Issues often arise from poor wiring, assembly and/or maintenance. Suspect those first.
Next only to our senses, the multi-meter is the most important electrical diagnostic tool. Spend $6 at Harbor Freight or $$$ blindly replacing parts.
