Hey fellas,
A while back I posted up about
repairing the door checks (aka door stopper thingies) on my 3rd gen and Timmy made a great video about it as well. Today I realized that this same kit can be used on 1st gen T4Rs (probably 2nd gens as well).
If you follow that link I have more details about how to do the repair so here I'll just be brief and note what I found to be different for the 1st gen.
Here's the old, grody door check. Its so worn out that it does nothing.
Drill the spot welds out
The old stopper insert is metal (I think diecast). On the 3rd gens it's nylon. The replacement is nylon with friction & wear fillers (MOS2)
New stoppers installed with the rubber springs. I ended up having to go back and put a compensator pad (which come with the kit) on each side to help it grab a little tighter.
I think these stoppers came with rubber bumpers to help soften the end-of-throw but mine was missing. I had a spare 3rd gen stopper and cut it up to recover the rubber piece and was able to install it here -- perfect fit!

All done. On the 1st gen the housing has threaded inserts and it installs onto the door with bolts. On the 3rd gen the housing has a captive stud instead.
Works way freaking better now! This install is honestly easier than the 3rd gen because the stopper rod can pull out of the housing while you're assembling it. Overall a little simpler.
