Engine turns..no start '94

Hello,
New member here, hoping to glean some expertise from all of you!

My youngest son worked all summer and saved to buy his first 4 runner (he isn't even 16 yet). He found a 94 v6 3.0 (3.slow) with about 125,000 on it. We drove it around town for about a week after buying it, when all of a sudden, it sputtered at a stop light, did a couple shakes and then died on us. The engine would turn over, but would not start.
We towed it home and he has since replaced the fuel filter, fuel pump, air filter, plugs, rotor/cap...and still no start. Every once in awhile, it rumbles just a second on the first crank, but doesn't stay on or ever give that sign of life again. The timing belt is next, but a quick inspection didn't look like that was the culprit.
Are there any fuses/relays that I should try to check/replace? What about sensors that I could bypass to see if it helped? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have until Jan 1st to get it running for his 16th bday.

I had a no start issue this past summer and it ended up being a bad distributor. It would crank but not start. I pulled a spark plug and had it connected to its spark plug wire and held it very close to the block and there was no spark. I replaced the ignitor and no luck. I tested the ignition coil with a multi-meter and it was within spec (per the factory service manual). This lead me to believe the distributor was bad and had a shop replace it.

Interesting... My dad just bought a 92 4Runner for my brother he is also not yet 16, and turns 16 in January too, but get this... same issue. Kinda crazy how similar our situation is haha. My issue is similar, He and my brother drove it home 140 miles after picking it up today and drove it to my work to show me. They stopped in the parking lot, and I came out, and he started it to show me how good it ran, and then shut it off. When they went to leave it would start and run for anywhere from 1-20 seconds before shutting off. Guy at work told me he is 99% sure it is the primary fuel pressure regulator, we jumped two pins on the diag port (I believe it was pins FP and B+) and it ran again until we pulled the paperclip. He said this confirmed he suspicion. While I want to believe him, it doesn't make any sense to me that bypassing the fuel pump relay fixed the broken diaphragm in the regulator? He's been a mechanic for 20 some odd years and has owned quite literally millions of 4Runners, so he knows his stuff. I already have a regulator coming in at NAPA, but I'm curious what this thread brings for answers before I pull the trigger.
