1984 4Runner starter assembly replacement

My starter isn't working and I can't seem to find a source for a new Denso starter motor assembly. Can anyone make a recommendation? Is it OK to use a remanufactured one if I can't find a new one?

I'm a parts counterman at a Toyota dealer, been there for over 20 years. You probably won't find a new one, and there's really no point. Re-man is fine. The Toyota part# is 28100-35060-84. List price is $164.82 plus a $60 core deposit. It is made by Denso. There are currently 16 available nationwide.

How sure are you that starter is not working? Many people replace parts without verifying that they are indeed defective and that replacing them will fix the problem. When they get the parts, the problem remains and they blame the replacement parts.

Toyota components are bullet-proof. Issues often arise from poor wiring, assembly and/or maintenance. Suspect those first.
Next only to our senses, the multi-meter is the most important electrical diagnostic tool. Spend $6 at Harbor Freight or $$$ blindly replacing parts.

It's usually just the brushes are worn out. You can get new brushes and replace them yourself.
