Diff crisis. Two different noises
Dear Members
An oil seal gave way recently on the rear axle due to the breather getting clogged up with shite. I didn't pay attention to it though immediately but realised that the oil must be pretty low in the diff.
Then the noises came. Two distinctly different noises which are confusing me.
1. Sounds like break pads down to the metal and scraping. Yet after popping off the outer hubs, it seems that although the pads are a little low, they seem ok. I can't see how the noise can be the brakes. Could it be the wheel bearings themselves making the scraping noise? The noise, i should add bears to relation to the revs, acceleration or decceleration. It comes and goes and lasts about a few seconds.
2. Second noise is a clicking coming from the rear diff itself. I noticed that there is a few degrees of play with the pinion itself, although the UJs are good. Is the clicking and clacking noise coming from this? I've got the wrong oil in at the moment, i know (140 gear oil which i put in to at least stay there rather than piss out while i wait for the bearing/oil seal kit to arrive). But is that clicking an indication that things are buggered inside and i should consider just changing the whole bloody diff?
Really appreciate your feedback and comments. And yes, i know i'm a dickhead for letting it get that bad.
