Lost cause?
Hey everyone!
I am not new to 4Runners but I don’t post much. I had a beautiful lifted and modded 4th Gen and had to sell it for financial reasons last year. I recently came across a 2nd Gen for, what seemed like a good price. I went and checked it out - frame was solid, drivetrain and 4WD works great. It runs, drives and stops straight. It’s got newer tires, new radiator and the interior is in nice shape. It was rusty and has 202k miles, but I figured I’d pick it up. I paid $2300 for it. When I got it home and started really digging into it, there is a lot more rust than I originally anticipated. The rear side bumpers were just barely hanging on… with some help from the wheel wells and mud flaps. Now, as I am exploring more and looking to do some mods, the rear springs are rough, the front left CV axle boot is shot, the gas tank is leaking… and more! I am about to consider it a loss and put it up for sale for half of what I paid for it just to get rid of it. When do you consider a 4Runner to be a lost cause? I can’t sink $5k into it at this point. Do I part it out? I’m just a bit discouraged and feel like I should take the loss. I don’t think the previous owners were trying to screw me. I think they just didn’t know how badly it was falling apart. Thoughts?
