Manual transmission talk

I have a Turbo '86 that was converted from automatic to manual somewhere in its history. Online parts finders indicate there are up to 5 manual transmission options, and more than two clutch options for this prior modification.

How does one identify what model of transmission is in the truck?

I appreciate the link. The site shows what was supposed to be mated to a turbo engine, but from what I have read, 4Runner turbos were automatic only. If someone grafted a manual onto the turbo, it is purely speculative that they used the correct turbo manual from a pickup.

I do not see on their site how to identify a trans model.

The 22R-TE (turbo 4) was definitely available with a 5 spd. I can't recall the exact model number, I'll try to remember. IIRC it was a beefed-up version of the trans that mated to the non-turbo EFI 4 cyl.

Also, if you think your truck was converted from an auto to a manual trans, then it would have a different t-case as well. To further figure out which W56 trans you have figure if it's mated to a top-shift t-case or a forward shift t-case. Because it may have been converted using a non-turbo trans/t-case combo, of which there were 2 types over different years.

I'm still pretty much a rookie with this 4Runner. I have an "overdrive" button above the radio, and cruise control that does not appear to work.

I had read somewhere that there were no turbo/manual 4Runners for 86, but as stated, my 4Runner knowledge is thin.

I'll have to get under the runner when its not 33' and wet outside to look at that transfer case.
