Gen 1 fuel sending unit

My 86 turbo has a rusted out fuel tank. Replacing the fuel tank, pump, etc, but the fuel sending unit 83320-39725 has long since been discontinued. I've tried a few sources and no one has a left over OEM or aftermarket sending unit.

A guy with some knowledge indicated that p/n 83320-39695 is still out there, but its for the larger fuel tank (17gal vs my stock 14.8gal). He suggested bending the float rod to shorten by about an inch.

What have you folks done to replace defective sending unit?

You're talking about the sending unit for the gas gauge? If so, yeah, I'd have no problem modifying it a bit to make it work. Actually, I think I've done that in the past. They're also pretty easy to fix if they become intermittent or have a dead spot.

Yes, the fuel level sending unit. We're going to bend the arm to make it work.

Well that didn't work out so well. I convinced the "we only put on factory parts" shop to try the longer factory sending unit. After new tank, pump, hangar, sending unit, and fuel filter it runs. No fuel gage. Guess I'm adding a note pad to my load out for the Runner.

Has anyone here had any luck with the universal adjustable float sending units with the smaller 14.7gal tanks?

I'm not paying someone to fail a 2nd time, so I'll be doing it myself after the truck comes back from getting its suspension replaced.

While experiences may vary, tackling it yourself is a solid approach post-suspension overhaul. Ensure precision, double-check compatibility, and embrace the DIY spirit – may your fuel gauge dance accurately after your hands-on expertise!
